The Dearborn Engine Laboratory performs dynamometer-based tests on gasoline and diesel engines, covering areas such as engine development and durability, powertrain calibration, heavy-duty gas / diesel engine certification, and cooling system evaluations.
The Emissions Test Engineer for the Engine Laboratory Department interfaces with requesting departments and outside suppliers to ensure testing requirements are understood and documented, and that engine setup, testing, and disposition are executed to the highest quality standards. They are also responsible for ensuring that tests conducted across multiple labs adhere to the same standards to produce correlated and accurate data. This role is fundamental to ensuring quality emissions testing and drives the development of new emissions measurement methods and equipment.
What you'll do...
Emissions Testing and Methodology Development :
Collaborate with global partners to forecast and plan for new equipment, procedures, and test methods.
Lead the development and implementation of new test methodologies to meet evolving emissions and fuel economy regulations.
Create and maintain detailed documentation for all testing protocols and procedures.
Provide expert troubleshooting support for lab maintenance and resolve complex technical issues.
Identify and implement opportunities for improving operational efficiency and test accuracy.
Data Analysis and Validation :
Conduct detailed data analysis and validation to support powertrain development projects.
Ensure data correlation and accuracy across multiple lab environments.
Utilize statistical process controls to monitor and enhance data quality.
Project Management :
Lead cross-functional teams in the design, deployment, and launch of new engine test facilities.
Manage project timelines, quality, and financial objectives to ensure successful delivery.
Employ a process-driven approach to manage complex installations and detailed design work.
Support the development of diverse powertrains by designing innovative test procedures and facility requirements.
You'll have...
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering.
10+ years of experience of powertrain development and testing
Working knowledge of internal fluid flow mechanics and basic heat transfer properties.
Experience with data analysis and a foundational understanding of statistics.
A motivated, self-starting individual with the ability to adapt to changing priorities.
Excellent organizational and communication skills.

Previous experience in a powertrain emissions and certifications role
Knowledge of the vehicle certification process specifically Heavy-Duty Engine Certification
Experience in writing and generating technical equipment specifications.
Working knowledge of basic chemistry.
