About the Position

Temporary position with funding secured through September 30, 2026 . Continuation of position will be based on funding and performance. The Family, Health and Wellbeing Community Facilitator will work with the Department of Family, Health and Wellbeing (FHW) team members and partners to support the advancement of health and well-being for all communities through understanding and elevating cultural perspectives, histories, and health practices. The person in this position will provide education, information, and resources across the state for health and wellbeing through prevention education, intergenerational teachings, and traditional foods and practices, such as storytelling, music, and the spoken word. Recognizing trauma and societal impacts of opportunity disparities, this position will develop key strategic partnerships with diverse partners to leave a legacy of health for future generations. This position is a key component of meeting grant deliverables related to culturally sustaining ways of working.

Job Responsibilities

Community Engagement and Partnership Development (50%)

  • Form and join local, statewide, and or national networks that advance health and wellbeing for diverse cultural communities and families that address social determinants of health.
  • Facilitate opportunities for shared learning and program development with community stakeholders to understand the connections between culture and health.
  • Partner with the Minnesota Department of Health and County Public Health entities to co-develop educational resources and models to prevent Diabetes among middle aged women in diverse communities.
  • Collaborate with schools, non-profits, and other partners to explore ways to integrate cultural knowledge, heritage, and foods through various co-learning opportunities.
  • Bring lived experiences and knowledge of culture to collaborate with FHW and Extension staff and community members to develop and or adapt educational resources addressing health through cultural healing and preventive education.

Teaching, Training, and Program Development (40%)

  • Utilize a Place-Based Approach (a community engaged approach), around the Ramsey County Garden to collectively learn and educate on culture-based health and wellness of all learners.
  • Develop a train the trainer (TtT) model to educate others with the knowledge, skills, and tools needed to effectively train others on the connection between culture and health.
  • Engage audiences, especially school-aged children and their teachers and other caregivers through learning experiences (tours, presentations, educational programs, etc.) at the Ramsey County Garden.
  • Utilizing Indigenous cultural practices as an example, promote mental flourishing for diverse learners through understanding the healing aspects of cultural practices and celebrations.
  • Administration (10%)

  • Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication, adapting style to meet the needs of diverse audiences.
  • Utilize computers and distance technology for data entry, communication, and creation of informational or teaching materials.
  • Apply digital tools to support evaluation, outreach, and administrative functions efficiently.
  • Qualifications

    Required Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's degree in education, public health, nutrition or related field plus 4 years of experience with American Indian communities to include intergenerational activities (work, volunteer or direct life) OR combination of education and relevant experience to total 8 years.
  • Experience working to understand American Indian cultural ways for learners from all communities.
  • Experience working with the Four Directions Medicine Garden in educating community members on plant medicines and understanding the link between culture and health.
  • Experience developing and implementing a training program so others can teach at the Ramsey County Garden.
  • Experience in community networking and relationship building
  • Ability to balance research with community wisdom
  • Understanding of social determinants of health
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Project management skills
  • Microsoft and Google suites applications proficiency
  • Valid driver's license and reliable vehicle with required liability insurance, to be utilized for local travel to meet with community partners and 2-3 departmental and Extension meetings across the state. Reimbursement for travel and subsistence is available in accordance with University policy.
  • Must be able to work regularly at a dedicated / assigned Extension office and must have reliable internet if / when working outside of the office.
  • When working out in the field / community, employees must be reachable with a mobile number at the employee's own expense.
  • Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule, including occasional evening and weekend work
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, set up and take down meeting and presentation materials.
  • Ability to work in varying weather and temperature conditions
  • Ability to work on a computer for prolonged periods of time.
  • This position is not eligible for employment visa sponsorship.
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Have experience with intergenerational work - with elders and youth or with families (parents and children)
  • Experiences educating communities to reconnect with land, culture, and healing
  • Trained in health coaching or motivational interviewing
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Advance computer skills with Google Suite, Microsoft Office, and virtual meetings such as Zoom

    Pay and Benefits

    Pay Range : $29.50 - $34.00 an hour; depending on education / qualifications / experience

    Time Appointment : 100% Appointment (40 hours / week), Temporary through September 2026
