Job description

Overview

WSP is initiating a search for a Senior Geotechnical Engineering Manager for the Merrimack, NH office. The candidate will be involved in projects with the Geotechnical Engineering Team as part of the Earth & Environment Group. The role is full-time in Merrimack, NH, with a hybrid in-person / remote schedule; alternative office locations include Eliot, ME; Portland, ME; Chelmsford, MA; Worchester, MA; or Boston, MA.

This position includes opportunities to contribute to projects such as foundations, soil & rock slopes, and retaining walls related to transportation (bridges and highways), pipelines, dams, mining, buildings, and private development. The ideal candidate will have education, engineering, and management experience in geotechnical & geologic projects across the United States with a focus on New England. This lead position involves a fast-paced team delivering geotechnical, geological, and civil engineering solutions with a mix of office work, project management, and field activities, requiring quality that meets industry standards for design, safety, accuracy, and functionality.

Responsibilities

  • Provide senior geotechnical / geological engineering review and technical assistance for evaluations, design, report preparation, contract document development, and construction of projects involving soil and rock mechanics; geohazards; soil / structure interaction; subsurface exploration and field testing; laboratory testing; geophysical methods; foundations for transportation structures; slope stability; retaining walls; excavation support systems; dewatering systems; instrumentation systems; pavement systems and earthwork operations.
  • Oversee collection, compilation, and analysis of data from the field, soil / rock samples, surveys and LiDAR, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, hydrologic analysis, geologic and geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
  • Apply high-level geotechnical / geological engineering techniques to identify improvements for project phases including concept development, preliminary design, final design, design / build partnerships, procurement, construction, and operation.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with rock mass characterization and rock / soil logging processes.
  • Develop construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates; prepare construction safety and phasing plans; update layout plans coordinating with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients.
  • Involved from proposal to project inception to completion in managing design and construction of infrastructure projects, including rehabilitation and reconstruction, grading, drainage, laying out installations, foundations, slopes, retaining structures, embankments, and other soil / rock-supported systems.
  • Oversee development and implementation of advanced technologies, monitoring devices, building materials, modeling techniques, design requirements, and operating strategies to ensure safety and functionality of end-users and transportation systems.
  • Lead larger-scale geotechnical / geological projects, managing budgets, tracking hours and expenses, supervising subcontractors and staff, and ensuring performance meets expectations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams on engineering projects across multiple sectors, clients, regulators, and project sites.
  • Assist with engineering review of permit applications, design plans, standby plans, contracts, and periodic inspections to ensure compliance with regulations and sound engineering practice.
  • Meet with public or private entities to discuss engineering / construction challenges and programs.
  • Prepare and review engineering drawings, specifications, work plans, calculations, and cost estimates; communicate findings and recommendations clearly in technical reports and presentations.
  • Prepare data visuals such as tables, charts, and illustrations for data interpretation and communication.
  • Interact professionally with colleagues, regulatory agencies, subcontractors, clients, drillers, and laboratory staff.
  • Develop and grow a client base for geotechnical / geological services, identifying additional business opportunities.
  • Provide technical direction, mentoring, and training to junior staff to support professional development.
  • Stay current on geotechnical / geological engineering techniques and practices.
  • Support national and regional client programs through participation with technical teams.
  • Contribute to business planning for sector growth and assist with marketing strategy development.
  • Identify regional technical needs and assist with recruitment in collaboration with senior colleagues.
  • Adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and policies; exercise ethical decision-making regarding company funds and resources.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or geological engineering with geotechnical / geological focus.
  • 10+ years of relevant post-education experience in geotechnical / geological engineering and design.
  • Engineer Licensure in one or more New England states or ability to receive comity (multi-state preferred).
  • Knowledge of engineering and geologic research techniques and protocols.
  • Ability to coordinate with clients, colleagues, and third-party groups; strong analytical, detail-oriented skills; experience with geological research techniques.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office and geotechnical specialty software.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for professional interactions at all levels.
  • Self-led with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to lead a team to meet business objectives under general supervision.
  • Proficiency in technical writing, office automation, and communication tools.
  • Ability to abide by health, safety, drug / alcohol, and harassment policies; comfortable in remote settings; willingness to perform various tasks as needed; occasional travel may be required.
  • Must successfully complete and pass WSP's Motor Vehicle screening.
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Master's degree in geotechnical or geological engineering.
  • Experience with rock mechanics and design / inspection of rock slope stabilization.
  • Experience with geomorphology and surface processes.
  • Project management experience supervising teams on complex or multi-project programs.
  • Client-focused with experience in client management and project delivery.
  • Strong verbal and written communication, analytical, and organizational skills; ability to work independently or with teams.
  • Expertise in geotechnical engineering practices and principles; active participation in local professional organizations.
