DEFINITION
Under general direction, performs staff and support duties related to public safety; work rotating shifts (may be assigned to various Bureaus of the Police Department); assists Police Department Personnel and the general public in public safety matters; and performs related duties as required.
TYPICAL TASKS
Appear at meeting of citizens and community groups to present crime prevention information; provide liaison to schools and other community groups; provide information and assistance at the police finger printing services issue parking and other citations; assist with the enforcement of various City and State codes, such as penal, municipal, local ordinances; maintains logs of all alarms; conducts home and business security inspections; may be assigned to perform Jailer duties; patrols streets for enforcement of parking laws; impounds and stores vehicles; directs traffic; and may supervise crossing guards.
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Positions in this non-sworn class report to various Bureau Supervisors.
Qualification Guidelines
Licenses : Possession of a valid Class C California Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
Knowledge of Geography of City; ordinances and laws with a minimal working knowledge of various criminal and civil statutes; modern office practices and procedures, including proper telephone and reception procedures and techniques; various office equipment such as typewriters, word processors, and computers.
Skills and Abilities : Read and understand departmental polices; rules, instructions, laws, regulations and other written material; meet the public and clearly articulate information related to Police / Community relations; establish and maintain the effective relationships with fellow employees, write clear and accurate reports; follow written and oral instructions; meet standards of physical health and condition, endurance and ability; compile and maintain crime statistics; and type information with a high level of accuracy.
Physical Effort : Performs tasks requiring physical effort, including bending, stooping, and lifting items weighing 25-35 lbs. Tasks may be performed in inclement weather.
