STAFF DENTIST

FUNCTIONAL STATEMENT

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF ASSIGNED DUTIES : This position is located in the Dental Service which is aligned under the Surgical / Specialty Care Service Line.

Staff dentist is to provide restorative, endodontic, periodontal, removable and fixed prosthodontic, including implant restorative, and minor oral surgery procedures.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES : The staff dentist is responsible for seeing patients in consultation in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Other duties include responding to patient telephone calls, informing patients of test / lab results, renewing medication prescriptions, giving telephone or e-mail advice to other providers, and administrative duties, as assigned.

On-call responsibilities are shared among the dentists.

The incumbent is responsible for entering accurate, complete, timely progress notes for each episode of care in the patient’s electronic record.

The incumbent is responsible for the proper use, maintenance, and calibration of specialized equipment used in the assessment and care of patients.

The incumbent adheres to safety, health, and infection control standards, regulations and work practices, as well as ergonomic standards.

He / she reports any unsafe conditions to supervisory and / or appropriate officials.

The incumbent assists in orientation of new staff, and will provide patient and family education, including informed consent which is documented according to corresponding VA policies..

The incumbent will assist with educating affiliated dental assistant and hygiene students.

The incumbent maintains supplies, equipment and clinical areas to optimize safety and efficiency.

The incumbent demonstrates knowledge and maintains standards in the use and reprocessing of Reusable Medical Equipment (RME).

The staff dentist is expected to participate in performance improvement activities, disaster preparedness, administrative duties, and other responsibilities assigned by the Chief, Dental Service.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS : The incumbent reports to the Chief, Dental Service.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS :

Daily intermittent walking, standing, bending, stooping, reaching, and carrying of lightweight items required. Rigid deadlines and need for high degree of accuracy periodically becomes stressful.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS : VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G .

CUSTOMER SERVICE :

Meets the needs of customers while supporting VA missions. Consistently communicates and treats customers (Veterans, their representatives, visitors, and all VA staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner.

Provides the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures. Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately.

AGE, DEVELOPMENTAL & CULTURAL NEEDS OF PATIENTS :

Age specific The employee must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on the assigned unit.

the principles of growth and development over the adult and geriatric life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirement relative to the age-specific needs, and to provide the care as needed as described in policies and procedures.
