Position Overview :
The Business Unit Leader (BUL) for our Geotechnical Engineering & Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Services Department, a.k.a. “Business Unit Leader”, will be responsible for the overall performance, growth, and management of the business unit, including overseeing the technical, financial, and operational aspects of the team. This individual will lead approximately 60 staff members, ensuring that projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest technical standards, while also driving business development and maintaining client relationships.
The BUL will serve as both a strategic leader and a seller-doer, combining managerial expertise with the ability to lead and execute geotechnical and construction-related projects and personnel. They will also be a key figure in expanding the company’s client base, fostering existing relationships, and positioning the firm as an industry leader.
Key Responsibilities :
Leadership & Team Management :
Oversee Operations : Manage and lead the day-to-day operations of the Geotechnical and CMT Business Units, ensuring that all projects, from inception to completion, are delivered efficiently, with high quality, and in compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
Team Leadership : Supervise, mentor, and provide guidance to a team of engineers, technicians, and support staff, totaling approximately 60 employees. Foster a collaborative and high performance culture while supporting career growth and development.
Employee Recruiting & Retention / Mentoring : Develop, monitor, and promote employee development program within RADISE. Including training, goal setting, certifications, professional licenses, internships, buddy system, mentoring, cross-training, promotion, and succession planning, throughout the employee lifecycle.
Resource Allocation : Ensure optimal staffing for projects, balancing workloads, and providing technical and managerial support to staff as needed.
Performance Management : Conduct regular performance reviews and set clear, measurable goals for staff, ensuring high levels of motivation and alignment with company objectives.
Business Development & Client Relations :
Business Growth : Proactively seek new business opportunities and foster long-term client relationships. Act as a “seller-doer,” participating in client meetings, technical writing, start-to-finish proposals, and presentations, while also actively leading and managing projects.
Client Management : Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with key clients, ensuring exceptional service delivery and client satisfaction. Develop strategies to increase client retention and identify potential project expansions.
Market Positioning : Actively represent the firm in industry events, conferences, and seminars to enhance the company’s brand presence and positioning in the geotechnical engineering and CMT space.
Project Management :
Strategic Oversight : Oversee the planning, design, and execution of geotechnical and CMT projects. Ensure that all projects are aligned with the company’s strategic goals, completed within budget and timeline, and meet or exceed technical and quality standards.
Budget & Financial Management : Develop and manage project budgets, ensuring cost-effective delivery of services while maintaining profitability. Approve invoices, contracts, and financial forecasts. Utilization goal of 35-50%.
Risk Management : Identify and mitigate potential risks in both project execution and business operations. Ensure compliance with all environmental, safety, and legal standards.
Quality Control : Maintain high technical standards and quality control on all deliverables. Collaborate with technical teams to resolve any technical challenges or project roadblocks.
Financial Oversight :
P&L Responsibility : Take full ownership of the Business Unit’s financial performance, including revenue generation, cost management, and profitability. Develop and manage annual budgets, forecasts, and reports.
Revenue Growth : Collaborate with other business unit leaders and senior management to set revenue and growth targets. Monitor financial performance and adjust strategies to meet goals.
Cost Control : Ensure financial performance by identifying cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality or safety.
Strategic Planning & Company Leadership :
Strategic Vision : Collaborate with senior management to set long-term strategic goals for the business unit and company as a whole. Participate in setting the firm’s vision and growth trajectory.
Cross-Department Collaboration : Work closely with other departments (e.g., marketing, human resources, finance) to support the company’s overall strategy and objectives.
Innovation & Best Practices : Stay ahead of industry trends and innovations in geotechnical engineering and construction administration. Implement best practices to continuously improve operational efficiency and service delivery.
Qualifications :
Education : A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering / CMT, or a related field.
Licenses : Professional Engineer in the State of Florida.
Driver License active with clean driving history.
Professional Experience : Minimum of 10 years of experience in geotechnical engineering and CMT, with at least 5 years in a leadership or managerial role. Experience managing teams of 30+ employees is highly preferred.
Technical Expertise : Strong technical knowledge of geotechnical design, construction administration, site investigation, and laboratory testing. Experience with complex geotechnical and construction projects and knowledge of local and national building codes and standards.
Business Development Experience : Proven track record of winning new business, building and maintaining client relationships, and managing multiple high-value projects.
Project Management : Strong project management experience, including budgeting, scheduling, and resource allocation. PMP or similar project management certifications are a plus.
Leadership Skills : Exceptional leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to manage, motivate, and inspire a diverse team.
Communication : Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with clients, stakeholders, and team members.

Salary Range : $140,000 - $160,000 (base salary), plus significant performance incentives
