Job Description
Under general administrative direction, the Principal Engineer / Architect manages, plans, assigns and directs the activities of several units or a group of professional and sub-professional engineering / architectural personnel engaged in a wide variety of design and / or construction projects.
The essential functions may vary by assignment and may include :
Qualifications
1) Nine (9) years of verifiable professional engineering work experience (e.g., civil, electrical, mechanical, sanitary / chemical / environmental, transportation / traffic, or structural), with at least six (6) years as a licensed professional engineer. Two (2) of the nine years must be equivalent to the City and County of San Francisco class 5211 Senior Engineer. AND
2) Possession of a current Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California.
Substitutions for Engineer Specialty :
Notes for Engineer Specialty : Some positions may require a certificate issued by ICBO / ICC or an equivalent body. Some positions may require additional licensing or experience in areas such as Construction Management, Structural Design, Corrosion, Fire Protection, Geotechnical Engineering, Environmental, or Instrumentation and Control Systems. Some candidates applying from outside California may be eligible for waiver until the required California license is presented.
License or Certificate : Some positions may require a valid driver license.
Working Conditions
Some positions may require lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders, working in high places and confined spaces, exposure to weather, and extended periods of standing, bending, or walking. Schedules may include weekends, holidays, part-time, nights, and / or overtime.
Verification & Eligibility
Applicants may be required to verify qualifying education and experience at any point in the process. Falsifying information may result in disqualification. All work experience, education, training and other information substantiating qualifications must be included by the filing deadline. Resumes are not accepted in lieu of a City and County of San Francisco application. One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2000 hours; overtime is not included in this calculation.
Selection Procedures

Applicants will complete a supplemental questionnaire as part of the online application. The questionnaire helps evaluate minimum qualifications and final ranking on the eligible list / score report.

Eligible List & About the Process
A confidential eligible list of applicants will be created for certification. The list may be public in accordance with law. The list is valid for 6 months and may be extended with approval. Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department.
