Job Summary :
This position is located in Preston, MS.
The incumbent will assist with the development, implementation and evaluation of the ASU Incubator Program (training site for small scale farmers wishing to farm but have limited farming experience) for Kemper and Winston Counties.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities :
- Knowledge and skill to educate small-scale farmers who are interested in the production of commercial vegetables to acquire hands on training opportunities.
- Knowledge and skill to maintain crop production records and working with the Farm Manager to prepare information pamphlets, fact sheets and cultivar trial reports.
- Knowledge and skill to assist with maintaining the Greenhouse operations, supports field and hoop-house demonstrations of alternate crops and local farmers transitioning into or new farmers initiating alternate crops production.
- Ability to write and communicate information clearly
Essential Job Functions :
- Identify and form working partnerships with relevant local organizations, agencies and institutions to deliver educational programs, events and activities
- Work with producers and agricultural-related associations to explore strategies for improving production and profitability based on environmentally sound recommendations
- Identify and establish working relationships with relevant local organizations agencies to deliver 4-H and Youth related educational programs, events and activities at County, Regional, and State Events
- Establish and maintain a working relationship with Extension Specialists, Extension / Research Center in Kemper, Winston other Extension Educators to develop and implement project proposals in high priority areas
- Assist communities with establishing Farmer’s Markets in their area
- Serve as a team member with county, regional and state staff agencies and organizations
- Responsible for building coalitions with agricultural and youth related groups, agencies and organizations
- Work with the Farm Manager to educate individuals who are interested in becoming farmers utilizing the Small Farm Incubator Center
- Assist with data collection related to field demonstrations conducted at the Small Farm Incubator where field grown crops such as sweet corn, sweet potato, watermelon, cowpea, and green crops produced in cultivar demonstration trials are conducted to provide UpToDate information to local small farmers
Qualifications :
- Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture with emphasis in plant science, horticulture, agronomy, soil science, or other closely related field.
- Three (3) years’ related experience.
Licensing and Certifications :
Valid driver’s license.
