Job Description

The mission of the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) is to work in partnership with communities to protect and promote the health and well-being of all Boston residents, especially those impacted by racism and systemic inequities.

The BPHC sets an expectation that all staff and leadership commit, individually and as part of the BPHC team, to hold ourselves accountable to establishing a culture of anti-racism and advance racial equity and justice through each of our bureaus, programs, and offices.

PROGRAM / DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

The Office of Racial Equity and Community Engagement (ORECE) works collaboratively with staff and partners for anti-racism transformational change, and operationalizing equity-centered practices, procedures and policies including the BPHC Anti-Racism and Equitable Community Engagement Policies.

DUTIES

This position requires a professional who has an extensive background in racial and social justice work with an emphasis on public policy and / or institutional systems change, who can skillfully design, implement and facilitate racial and health equity approaches to a broad audience of staff and community partners.

The position requires someone with proven managerial and supervisory experience, who is a creative critical thinker and excellent communicator both written and oral, and who is relationship-driven and collaborative in planning and executing priorities and initiatives.

Examples of specific duties :

  • Co-lead the implementation of the BPHC Strategic Plans Anti-Racism and Equity strategies.
  • Co-develop and implement guidance, tools and practice approaches including operationalize the BPHC Equity Lens to support departments to identify inequities in service delivery, programming, procedures, and policies;

support departments and teams to design Equity Plans using the BPHC Equity Lens.

  • Provide racial equity and anti-racism content expertise and co-design training; facilitate training and technical assistance, and other substantive support to BPHC departments to operationalize racial equity concepts, frameworks, and tools.
  • Co-develop and implement Equitable Community Engagement standard of practice and initiatives to increase community involvement in BPHC and community partner decision-making processes.
  • Use the BPHC Equity Lens to review and update existing and / or develop new internal policies, procedures, and practices;

provide guidance, visionary leadership, and support to departments to make systems changes.

  • Support community partners to develop and implement equity-centered policies, practices, and initiatives.
  • Compile reports and written materials and provide regular updates on ORECE and / or BPHC anti-racism and equity work and progress to all staff, leadership, board members, and partners as needed.
  • Design agendas and facilitate meetings, oversee working and advisory groups, and represent BPHC at internal and external meetings and conferences.
  • Contribute racial and health equity content to BPHC social media and website, and other communications.
  • Co-plan and support the execution of community-facing events as needed and requested.
  • Stay current and conduct environmental scans and literature reviews of racial equity and justice policy and practice and make recommendations to ORECE and Executive Office.
  • Work in a confidential capacity. Operate independently. Use independent judgment and discretion to make decisions affecting departments and staff as it relates to BPHC policy, operations, services.
