Brief Summary of Job Duties :

Under the general supervision of the Customer Success and Outreach Supervisor, the Career Advisor serves as the primary point of contact for UCSB PaCE students seeking guidance on career outcomes, internships, and employment opportunities. The advisor provides one-on-one and group advising focused on career exploration, job readiness, resume writing, interviewing skills, and networking. They support a diverse student population-including Degree Plus participants, international students, and domestic professional learners-by aligning advising services with students' professional goals and academic tracks.

The advisor collaborates closely with PaCE leadership, the Degree Plus Academic Coordinator, UCSB Career Services, and program managers to connect students with internship opportunities and support workforce development initiatives. They utilize digital tools such as Handshake and virtual advising platforms to increase accessibility and engagement. The advisor also maintains detailed records in the department's CRM system, analyzes data on student outcomes, and contributes to reporting efforts that guide strategic planning and demonstrate program effectiveness.

In addition to student advising, the advisor plays a key role in developing and managing partnerships with internship providers, employers, academic departments, and community organizations. They conduct outreach, support events that highlight student talent and workforce alignment, and represent PaCE in local business and economic development settings. The advisor also contributes to marketing and communications efforts by curating content for the website and social media, ensuring the visibility and relevance of career services across audiences.

Required Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's Degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • 1-3 years of experience working with students in career development and / or student affairs
  • Knowledge of career development theories, adult development theory, counseling processes, career coaching techniques, career decision making, learning styles, and job search techniques
  • Ability to manage employer relationships, alumni relationships
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, employers, and community members
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; excellent presentation skills
  • Ability to use computer systems, applications, and organization skills
  • Customer service mindset with emphasis on care and empathy while providing services to students, staff, faculty, and external clients

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Master's degree in higher education, student personnel administration, and counseling.
  • Demonstrated program management and evaluation including data collection and assessment.
  • Knowledge of UC programs, career services, recruiting and staffing methods, and employment trends.
  • Basic knowledge of survey design, survey execution, and survey software (SurveyMonkey and / or Qualtrics)
  • Special Conditions of Employment :

  • The contract term is through 6 / 30 / 27. Further renewal is subject to Degree Plus grant funding.

  • Under the general supervision of the Customer Success and Outreach Supervisor, the PaCE Career Advisor serves as the primary point of contact for PaCE students regarding programmatic career outcomes, internships, and employment opportunities.
  • The incumbent :

    Works with students to match them with internships in their post-degree professional specialization. Their target audience might include UCSB students participating in the Degree Plus program, international students eligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT) or similar programs, and domestic students enrolled in PaCE's professional courses.

  • Conducts group and individual career advising sessions with students regarding career readiness, decision-making, goal setting, career research, and the internship search process.
  • Plans and supports events in collaboration with community partners to showcase student talent, PaCE programs, and regional workforce initiatives.
  • Conducts relevant career field research and gathers career-related resources to inform advising conversations.
  • Provide expertise in resume writing, interviewing skills, job search strategies, and networking.
  • Intentionally integrates the use of online tools into advising, such as Handshake, online resume critiques, online interview practice, online counseling appointments, webinars, and other tools as they emerge.
  • Works with the Associate Dean of PaCE and all the Program Managers to understand the job market and internship opportunities opened by PaCE programs.
  • Works with the Degree Plus Academic Coordinator to understand the potential of the graduating students and the scope of their internship placements.
  • Uses PaCE's CRM system to :
  • Maintain records for students, employers, mentors, partners, and support agencies.

  • Gather, analyze, and report data on internship placements, employment rates, and post-graduation salary outcomes to assess program effectiveness, guide strategic planning, inform stakeholders, and support grant reporting requirements.
  • Partner Relationships : Development, Enhancement, and Maintenance 35%

  • The incumbent actively develops and strengthens relevant campus and off-campus relationships and partnerships through targeted outreach and special programming initiatives. Researches job market conditions and the local and regional corporate landscape and employment opportunities. Further, the incumbent :
  • Establishes operating procedures for collaboration with academic units, local companies, and government in alignment with PaCE strategies and goals.

  • Works collaboratively with academic staff and student groups to determine the best career service needs for the students.
  • Engages with local and regional community organizations to build partnerships that enhance student career development and increase the visibility of PaCE programs
  • Writes and updates career and internship-related sections of the PaCE website and social media outlets.
  • As appropriate, participates in committees and task forces designed to improve the quality of services to targeted students, advising, informing, and updating the PaCE team regarding the career development and internship needs of assigned student populations.
  • Coordinates with regional economic development agencies to align internship and workforce initiatives with local growth trends.
  • Works with PaCE Marketing to implement outreach efforts to increase participation and interest in PaCE career programs and services.
  • Represents PaCE at local business and community meetings (e.g., Chamber of Commerce) to advocate for program impact and identify collaboration opportunities.
