Position Overview
Jeweler’s Block Underwriter – Full‑time, exempt. Remote or hybrid across the U.S. This is the senior-most underwriting role in the Marine team, focusing on production excellence, portfolio quality, sales, operations, talent development, and strategy execution. Provides technical guidance to local teams and leadership on account strategy.
In This Role
- Underwrite new business, renewals, and endorsement referrals.
- Achieve financial targets for overall growth and profitability; execute plans to meet results.
- Oversee junior underwriters on portfolio management and strategic underwriting decisions.
- Ensure compliance with corporate and regulatory requirements; maintain underwriting discipline.
- Develop new business opportunities with agents; promote the Hanover franchise.
- Contribute to broader strategy formulation with a focus on execution.
Business Development
Identify and drive enhanced business opportunities and growth within other lines and customer segments.Utilize our value proposition to improve agency economics and product specialization.Prioritize relationship management and producer activities to secure improved yield and retention.Implement territory business plans, monitor performance, and adjust to sustain profitable growth.Engage distribution and field leadership to develop business opportunities.Coach field underwriters on top selling techniques specific to the industry.Collect market intelligence (price, product, services) and advocate for change.Assist in developing new product capabilities, emerging market opportunities, and growth initiatives.Portfolio Management
Manage portfolio for assigned territory with guidance from leadership.Provide input on portfolio, distribution, and infrastructure strategy.Analyze industry financial performance and recommend corrective actions.Gather local intelligence to drive product and service improvements.Proactively respond to regulatory and legal changes.Maintain understanding of industry competitors, trends, and emerging issues.Monitor underwriting results and recommend profitability improvements.Underwriting Development and Support
Assist managers and underwriters with challenging technical underwriting situations.Support portfolio management, underwriting quality, reinsurance referrals, and business planning.Handle complex underwriting referrals beyond other team members.Assist in training development and delivery.Develop relationships with Operations, Loss Control, and Claims to operationalize underwriting decisions.What You Need to Apply
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience; professional designations preferred.10+ years of proven Marine / Jeweler’s Block underwriting experience.Strong proficiency in underwriting, book management, marketing, and product development.Ability to coach underwriters and manage priorities in a fast‑paced environment.Excellent communication skills—face‑to‑face, presentations, phone, and written—plus impeccable follow‑through.Demonstrated collaboration and influence across multiple levels of the organization.High business, insurance, and marketplace knowledge.Willingness to travel as needed.Career Development
