Position Summary

  • The associate chair is responsible for assisting the department chair, associate dean or school dean with the day to day operations of a new or small department and works closely with the department chair, associate dean or school dean to provide vision and leadership for the department;
  • build a substantial reputation for the quality of the department; create a strong sense of collegiality within the department and of shared responsibility for the department's goals;
  • work with faculty on curriculum development, assessment activities and policy / procedures requirements and implementation, including course schedules and facility use;
  • conduct class and annual evaluations for faculty as needed, as well as ensuring mentoring and faculty development opportunities;
  • assist in the hiring of faculty; make decisions on student academic matters; assist in the recruitment of students; assist in graduate admission and placement of students in internships and careers;

and oversee departmental budget. The associate chair collaborates with the department chair, associate dean or school dean to ensure that overall school goals and SCAD's strategic plan are achieved.

The associate chair teaches classes as assigned.

The associate chair shows model leadership and ensures that all services related to the academic offerings of the department are planned and delivered at the highest quality and without any interruptions.

The associate chair makes sure that SCAD's policies and procedures are administered without any exceptions.

Duties and responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES In consultation with department members, provides input to the department chair, associate dean or school dean on a strategic plan for the department that is consistent with the school and overall SCAD strategic plan.

Includes in that plan strategies for building the quality of the department so that it is highly-ranked, where applicable, and has a strong reputation both within and beyond higher education.

Fosters a shared vision and a commitment by all faculty to contribute to the goals of the department and to work together in so doing;

insists on mutual respect among department members through collegiality; supports the department chair, associate dean or school dean in building a department team through frequent communications and effective meetings.

Ensures that the faculty in the department are constantly reviewing the curriculum for quality and currency; adhering to educational outcomes statements and assessment and accreditation activities through a coordinated approach with the office of institutional effectiveness;

understanding and following all academic policies and procedures; provided with an appropriate course schedule, facility and technology use.

Provides input and recommendations to the department chair, associate dean or school dean on curriculum changes. Sets results-oriented objectives for their employees and gives both positive and critical feedback to direct reports and holds them accountable as needed.

Evaluates the faculty within the department through class observations, a review of student evaluations, a review of service and professional development, and a review of contributions to the department's goals.

Meets individually with each faculty member in a performance management session that is followed by a written summary, including any pertinent recommendations to the department chair, associate dean or school dean, as needed.

Assists the department chair, associate dean or school dean in hiring of new faculty and in providing, or providing for, mentoring to new faculty and, in concert with department chair, associate dean or school dean, professional development opportunities for faculty.

Makes decisions on student matters within defined academic support processes (such as course substitutions and exemptions, application for independent study or internships, waiver of prerequisites, etc.

Works with the admission department to recruit talented students, both undergraduate and graduate, to SCAD and to the department.

Works with the admission department to review graduate student applications to ensure consistency and timeliness in the review process.

Coordinates faculty and staff for an outstanding showcase of the department and student work during SCAD Days and other high-profile events.

Collaborates with career and alumni success to assist with employment and internship opportunities for students in the department.

Represents the department and the university internally and externally and promotes the achievements of students and faculty.

Oversees the departmental budget, including its development and implementation. Responsible for departmental expenditures and budget controls.

Prepares required quarterly, annual and ad hoc reports related to the department. Monitors key departmental data (enrollment, seat utilization, registration, retention, graduation, employment, etc.

to achieve excellence and maximum efficiency in all operations. Resolves, when appropriate, faculty and / or student issues, utilizing good judgment and consulting the applicable parties.

Teaches classes in fall, winter and spring quarters as assigned, unless otherwise adjusted by human resources. May also teach classes in the summer quarter if business needs necessitate.

May report for duties during the summer quarter if identified as a need. Extends unconditional support and assistance to achieve success in all accreditation matters.

Collaborates across departments and locations to ensure success for SCAD as an integrated university. Duties may vary and other duties may be assigned. - (Essential)

Minimum Qualifications : Credentials sufficient to command the respect of the department members, which normally includes a terminal degree in that field (Ph.

D. or Master's degree (MFA preferred) in relevant field). Leadership and supervisory experience in academic area.

Demonstrated effectiveness as an academic leader, normally through service on academic groups or through special assignments.

A successful career as a faculty member, including a reputation for high academic standards and innovation in curriculum and pedagogy.

Experience with curriculum development and the utilization of assessment to improve student learning and academic programs.

Ability to conduct thorough, thoughtful, and fair faculty evaluations, including class observations, productive individual evaluation meetings, and clearly stated written evaluations that reinforce the faculty member's strength and outlines areas of needed improvement with suggested strategies and support for that improvement.

The knowledge to define the needs of the department on new faculty hires and the personnel judgment to make appropriate recommendations to the Dean for hiring and reappointment.

Terminal degree in the discipline or in a relevant field. Leadership and supervisory experience in academic area.

Demonstrated effectiveness as an academic leader, normally through service on academic groups or through special assignments.

A successful career as a faculty member, including a reputation for high academic standards and innovation in curriculum and pedagogy.

Experience with curriculum development and the utilization of assessment to improve student learning and academic programs.

Ability to conduct thorough, thoughtful and fair faculty evaluations, including class observations, productive evaluation individual meetings and clearly stated written evaluations that reinforce the faculty member's strength and outlines areas of needed improvement with suggested strategies and support for that improvement.

The knowledge to define the needs of the department on new faculty hires and the personnel judgment to make appropriate recommendations to the department chair, associate dean or school dean on hiring and reappointment.

The judgment to make good and fair decisions in the student's best academic interests with regard to various waivers and expectations and the ability to justify and document those decisions in written reports.

Willingness to collaborate with admission on the recruitment and review of students, with career and alumni success on employment and internship opportunities for students, and on building links to careers related to the discipline, and with other academic and non-academic departments in the best interests of students and the university.

Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and exceptional work ethics to meet expectations and deadlines in such matters as course scheduling, classroom scheduling, budgetary development and oversight and preparation of required reports.

Outstanding interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills.

Innovative and of the highest personal and professional integrity.
