Hiring Range

The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The salary or hourly range the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $61,300 - $74,000 / yr.

Job Closing Date

About the Job

The Student Services Advisor works independently under general supervision to provide information and interpretation of complex policies, procedures and regulations, advises faculty and management on a variety of student issues, and works with program leaders to recommend changes to policies, practices, and procedures. The Student Services Advisor is a student-facing position that works directly with students to provide guidance, answer questions, resolve issues, and refer them to campus units as needed. The incumbent develops new community educational programs and works on complex community educational programs and / or volunteer educational management programs of diverse scope. The incumbent demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for delivering courses, presentations, and development of programs. They will work collaboratively with the Student Affairs Manager on events, presentations, and webinars for current UCM students and specific pre-medical and pre-health student populations.

The incumbent uses skills as a seasoned, experienced student services professional, to provide the full range of student services for UC Merced based SJV PRIME+ BS / MD, pre-medical, and pre-health students. The incumbent identifies and responds to student needs for programs, services, and crisis intervention, independently advises students and resolves student services-related issues on the full range of academic issues inherent within the program and DOME, ensuring systems are in place :

  • To cultivate a sense of belonging for every student through mentoring, advising, community-building programs and organizational support for all SJV PRIME+ students
  • To provide enhanced support services for student well-being to meet a variety of needs for these student populations
  • To provide the resources, structures, and support necessary for students to transform into the 21

st

Century UCSF Physician

  • To help support students in successfully balancing programmatic and campus requirements and responsibilities
  • To work with campus student service offices, Academic Advising Offices, Career Center, Housing (LLC), Registrar, Tutoring Center, and Admissions on programming initiatives
  • Additionally, the incumbent assesses situations and determines appropriate action or referral. Guidance on issues requiring in-depth knowledge of specialized programs is provided by UC Merced and UCSF offices specializing in those fields (e.g., the financial aid office, graduate division, or student learning center, etc.)

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Independently provide the full range of support services for SJV PRIME+, pre-medical, and pre-health students, to resolve moderate to complex individual cases regarding student affairs or student life. Refer to other campus and program resources as appropriate.
  • Advise and refer students to relevant school, campus, and community resources, escalating issues to advisors, mentors, deans, or other staff as appropriate; advise leadership on emergent student issues such as student crises, feedback on the curriculum, or concerns with services; serve as an advocate for student needs and concerns.
  • Advise faculty on program and university policies and procedures; review students' progress and advise students and faculty on requirements for program and degree completion; identify students with progression problems and recommend interventions
  • Work in close partnership with a faculty director and through collaboration with key stakeholders to encourage student leadership, such as peer tutoring and teaching; serve as an advisor to student organizations.
  • Serve as the communications liaison between students and program leadership, including administering the student listservs, managing the main phone line, and email account.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to maintain, update, and improve program websites.
  • Oversee the administration, evaluation, and awarding of student fellowships, grants, scholarships, and other awards; advise students on financial aid options of the program and extramural fellowship opportunities.
  • Assists, advises, and guides pre-medical and pre-health students, remains current and updated on pre-health / pre-medical information, best practices, and university policies and procedures that impact pre-medical and pre-health students.
  • Collaborates with UC Merced departments and advising offices across campus on student success, support, and retention initiatives for pre-medical and pre-health students.
  • Support and cover duties for colleagues during peak times or absences; offer cross-functional support to fellow advisers as needed. Plan and implement complex, high-visibility student events.
  • Lead all orientation activities including welcome event and medical school day, coordinate key transitions (i.e., graduation, white coat ceremony, transition to and through medical school, etc.).
  • Plan, design, and provide workshops and webinars for students, such as information about the program, organization, or academic strategies and enrichment opportunities.
  • Develop and enhance an alumni recruitment network.
  • Actively participate in long-range strategic planning for community educational programs. Develop and maintain relationships with internal and external organization stakeholders critical to program success.
  • Administer a limited public service program, providing such services as working with outside agencies to refer students and develop programs to work in public service roles.
  • Identify resources for student volunteer opportunities; matching student volunteers with outside public service agencies.
  • Provide education, training and reflection opportunities to students engaged in public service
  • Evaluate prospective program partnerships.
  • Track student or participant performance and course desirability.
  • Provide recommendations, reports, and metrics on feasibility of new and current programs.
  • Manage the resources and services for SJV PRIME+, analyzing feedback, anticipating student needs, and implementing improvements to ensure that the program continues to effectively serve and support students.
  • Recommend, develop, and execute new administrative procedures and / or programmatic structure, as needed.
  • May administer funds for student programs.
  • Qualifications

    EDUCATION and REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or equivalent experience / training. (Required)
  • Advanced degree from an accredited university. (Preferred)
  • Three years of directly related, progressively responsible experience in a student services job function, or equivalent experience / training. An advanced degree in Student Affairs or a related field is preferred, and may substitute for one year of experience.
  • CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
  • Solid verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills and presentation skills.
  • Ability in project management, problem identification and reasoning; ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
  • Thorough knowledge of organization policies and procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of and skill in delivering programs.
  • Thorough knowledge of current community educational programs and trends.
  • Thorough skills to conduct needs assessment and development of new presentations / courses to meet organizational needs.
  • Knowledge of managing a portfolio of business and management courses at the university level.
  • Thorough knowledge of functional area and understanding of how work may impact other areas.
  • Skill in using business software systems in the completion of work assignments; i.e. Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint.
