Associate Staff Engineer - Material Characterization and Testing

We are seeking an Associate Staff Engineer - Material Characterization and Testing who will support the technical activities of the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute (HEMI) in the 3D characterization facility and HyFIRE fest facility under the supervision of the staff engineer and faculty for the Institute.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage the 3D characterization facility, including a FE-SEM, EBSD and EDS detectors, in situ mechanical tester, and high-powered femtosecond laser.
  • Assist in operation and research efforts in other HEMI facilities, including HyFIRE testing facility and AIMD materials characterization facility.
  • Train researchers in the use of equipment and manage all aspects of safety in the space.
  • Take an active role in the development and integration of peripheral systems for the facility in conjunction with faculty and researcher goals.
  • Manage and train users in specimen preparation tools and techniques.
  • Manage and train researchers in other material characterization systems as directed by the HEMI staff and faculty.
  • Assist in developing budgets and proposals for research experiments and facilities, including estimates and purchases of supplies, materials, and equipment.
  • Coordinate with Whiting School manufacturing on the machining of components for research in the 3D facility.
  • Assist with the management and scheduling of experimental resources and inventory.
  • Assist with presenting and representing institute capabilities around the university and outside collaborators.
  • Assist in operation and research efforts in other HEMI facilities, including HyFIRE and AIMD labs.
  • Facilitate work for researchers with other departments at the university.

Special knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Experience with electron microscopy and detectors used with electron microscopy.
  • Experience integrating several diagnostic or analytical tools through software and hardware integration.
  • Experience with mechanical testing, impact testing, and material properties.
  • Experience with specimen preparation for microscopy and mechanical testing.
  • Experience managing equipment, writing SOPs and implementing safety procedures.
  • Experience with Python or other programming languages.
  • Familiarity with femtosecond lasers, optics, and laser safety.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or related Physical Science or Engineering field.
  • One to two years of experience in research or laboratory settings involving materials characterization, mechanical testing and advanced scientific instruments.
  • U.S. Citizenship required due to nature of funding and grants HEMI receives. Permanent employment is contingent upon obtaining and maintaining a U.

S. Government personal security clearance within six months of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Engineering or Science.
