Firefighter / EMT (Volunteer)
Under basic supervision of the Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, and / or Fire Captain, the Firefighter / EMT (Volunteer) responds to fires, medical emergencies and other emergency and non-emergency situations, and takes appropriate action to protect life and property; performs various staff support assignments in addition to normal emergency response activities.
Examples of Duties :
In a fire emergency connects supply lines; controls and extinguishes fires using various size hand-lines deck ladders and portable water monitors; connects foam educators and applies foam and chemical for fire suppression. Searches buildings and rescues victims from buildings and motor vehicles sometimes using specialized power and hand tools; uses various hand and power tools to obtain entry to buildings frees trapped accident victims and provides ventilation. Provides emergency medical care at the basic life support level including initial patient and situation assessment cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and trauma emergency medical care. Prepares patients and assists Firefighter / Paramedics in advanced life support emergency medical care. Contains controls and decontaminates hazardous material spills. Participates in clean-up salvage overhaul operations; cleans, services and ensures operational readiness of fire vehicles apparatus hoses and equipment and assists with the maintenance of the station and facilities. Participate in various staff support assignments including but not limited to : fire prevention inspection and investigation; maintenance of inventory records; and scheduled inspection of department equipment. Participate in daily building maintenance for training facilities living facilities and fire station grounds. Participate in fire department related equipment checks preventative maintenance and testing. Works with the community in a variety of educational public relations and service programs; may provide CPR training classes as assigned. May serve in a higher-level classification on a regular basis if certified and / or licensed to do so.
Typical Qualifications :
Completion of high school degree or equivalent. Completion of a CA state certified Firefighter I Academy or FF1 certification. Hold a valid CA EMT Card and AHA BLS card. Have a valid CA Class C Driver's License and are able to complete a firefighter's endorsement within 1 year of employment (Preference given to OSFM driver / operator certified). Must have a satisfactory driving record clear of misdemeanor convictions and have no felony convictions. Ability to work 24-hour shifts as assigned. Must pass and maintain physical requirements as specified by the City.

Compensation : This is a voluntary position without compensation. Benefits : This is a voluntary position without benefits. Schedule : The Fire Department operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. The shifts are 6 : 30AM-6 : 30AM. Firefighter / EMT (Volunteer) is required to work one shift per week. Additional shifts can be worked as needed for shift coverage.
