Organizational Summary :
Since 1967, North Carolina Outward Bound School (NCOBS) has delivered challenging wilderness adventures that teach more than outdoor skills. Our wilderness courses, from the mountains of North Carolina to the shores of south Florida to the peaks of South America, deliver on our mission "to change lives through challenge and discovery."
NCOBS wilderness courses are primarily backpacking-based expeditions that incorporate whitewater paddling (canoe and / or rafting) during the course. The Resident Whitewater Specialist will join a crew of students and field instructors to manage risk on the river and collaborate with field instructors to deliver curriculum on class I-III rivers. This role with camp with the crew from two-five days.
Essential Functions :
- Deliver safe and quality whitewater canoeing and rafting instruction to NCOBS' staff and students.
- Assist WPM in logistical and administrative support of NCOBS Whitewater programs.
Duties and Responsibilities :
Ensure paddling programs adhere to National and NCOBS risk management policies, risk management procedures, local operating procedures, and directives from WPM.Deliver safe and quality whitewater canoeing and rafting instruction to NCOBS' staff and students.Assist the WPM in ensuring consistency and program quality.Assist the WPM in organizing and facilitating river related staff training and professional development days.Deliver instruction and professional development that is consistent with American Canoe Association (ACA) curriculum that supports staff paddling skills development.Assist the WPM in managing, maintaining, and repairing the equipment and supplies of the whitewater program.Working Conditions
The employee must occasionally lift and / or move up to 50 pounds.While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit.The employee is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell.Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.Participate in vigorous to moderate physical activity including but not limited to running, swimming, and paddling.Primarily based at the Town Office location.Camping in the field for up to four-five nights at a time.Irregular hours and weekend work are expected.Qualifications
Personal and professional values consistent with the NCOBS mission, values, and principles.Wilderness First Responder, and CPR.ACA Level 4 Whitewater Canoe Instructor or equivalent qualification.Swiftwater Rescue course attended within the last 3 years.Valid driver's license, greater than 5 years.Experience with community living.Minimum of two years working for Outward Bound or similar programs.NCOBS Lead Whitewater Specialist preferred.Proven communicator in oral and written platforms. Ability to speak clearly and is comfortable with presenting to groups.Strong safety management experience.A strong record of quality leadership, professionalism, reliability, and positive co-working relationships.Proficient in Office 365 (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint)Compensation and Benefits
