Position

Radiation Physicist II – Radiation Oncology Contingent Days

Responsibilities

• Under limited supervision, calculate prescribed radiation dosages for patients undergoing radiation therapy treatments.
• Calibrate and maintain radiation therapy machines and equipment.
• Provide consultative service in radiation therapy to departmental personnel.
• Develop and recommend specific treatment plans for patients with neoplastic disease to attending physicians based on thorough review and analysis of radiation oncology patient data.
• Ensure proper calibration of radiation-producing machines and equipment; review patient treatment records to verify prescribed physical parameters have been executed.
• Ensure equipment is regularly tested and maintained to guarantee constancy of radiation delivered to the patient.
• Participate in developing techniques or apparatus for planning and treatment delivery.
• Develop and participate in the departmental radiation safety program; ensure compliance with federal and state radiation safety regulations.
• Participate in teaching lectures and laboratory classes in Wayne State University academic programs, including residency training programs.
• Provide consultation to the medical staff on the physical aspects of treatment plans.
• Participate in clinical research efforts; provide technical information and advice in radiologic physics and technology to support staff.
• Assist with acceptance testing of new treatment and simulation units.
• Recommend acquisition of new equipment based on cost-effectiveness data.
• Contribute to development / verification of computer programs used for dosage calculations and mapping.
• Develop in-service education programs for residents, technologists, and physics students and assistants as needed.
• Provide personnel training to residents, physicists, and other department personnel.
• Participate in development of departmental policies and procedures; provide medical physics consultation to hospital departments and administration; serve on departmental, hospital, university, and professional committees.
