Job Purpose and Focus

To assist students and their families in resolving personal, emotional and social problems which may interfere with the student's ability to make use of the school experience. To help identify and prescribe treatment programs for special education-eligible students.

Essential Qualifications and Requirements

  • Master's Degree
  • Full approval by the Department of Education as a school social worker
  • Extensive understanding of special education administrative rules and laws and all disabilities listed in the Administrative Rules
  • Job-related experience
  • Ability to plan and coordinate effectively with other professionals
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Demonstrated initiative and understanding in working with students, staff, and parents / guardians
  • Ability to use appropriate assessment instruments and properly interpret results
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing training
  • Ability to function within board policies and procedures with a minimum of supervision
  • Ability to exercise confidentiality in relationships with students, faculty, and the general public
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective record keeping systems and procedures

Essential Functions and Representative Duties

  • Ability to write effective behavior plans and Functional Behavior Assessments with input of other staff
  • Ability to write effective social / emotional goals on Individual Education Plans (IEPs)
  • Ability to understand the IEP process and conduct an effective IEP team meeting
  • Understanding of the student referral evaluation process
  • Serve as referral source for school personnel
  • Conduct home visits as necessary for problem cases or simply to enhance communication or address specific issues for students
  • Coordinate and develop resources within and outside the school system for use by children, their families and school personnel.
  • Provide crisis intervention and crisis management for district students and staff
  • Serve as primary liaison between schools, families, and resources in the community and within the district
  • Perform casework service with individual students to correct those personal, social, or emotional maladjustments related to their educational and social progress
  • Maintain necessary records and written communications regarding all of the above
  • Meet Medicaid billing deadlines on a monthly basis
  • Perform other duties as assigned

    Wages and benefits as outlined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement with The Board of Education.

    Work Environment

    Work is normally performed in a typical school building and / or office environment. There is limited exposure to physical risk. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignment

    without direct supervision. Must be able to work toward district goals.
