Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit :
The mission of the School of Social Work is to advance equity, transform systems, improve lives. The School’s curriculum supports the mission and recognizes the uniqueness of the region served, including concerns for disadvantaged, vulnerable, and oppressed individuals, families and communities. Classes provide rigorous and evidence-based content, and give students the opportunity to explore theory, learn intervention skills and engage in challenging dialogue with colleagues.
The Office of Community Engagement and Outreach (OCEO) is a newly launched initiative within the UNC School of Social Work that seeks to reinforce, reimagine, and reenergize how the School partners with communities in pursuit of its mission : advancing equity, transforming systems, and improving lives. The OCEO strengthens both the School’s capacity for community engagement and the capacity of communities themselves to drive social change.
Position Summary :
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station. If business needs change, an individual employee’s designation may be adjusted with a required minimum of ten (10) business days’ notice unless employee conduct or safety issues necessitated otherwise at the discretion of management.
The Community Engagement Program Manager is a newly created position that will report to the Assistant Director of Community Engagement and Outreach and will collaborate closely with the Assistant Director and Associate Dean of Community Engagement and Outreach to pilot programs and services that respond to community priorities around complex social challenges such as poverty, food insecurity, workforce development, healthcare access, affordable housing, child care, and other areas that affect community health and well-being.
The Office of Community Engagement and Outreach seeks to find innovative ways to provide technical assistance to communities, community-based organizations, and public agencies to build their internal capacity to achieve their missions. Technical assistance may include connection to resources, needs assessments, systems mapping, workshop planning, facilitation, coalition building, curriculum development and training, program evaluation, and other types of support. The Community Engagement Program Manager will be responsible for both delivering technical assistance and managing teams of students, faculty and staff collaborators, and external consultants who provide technical assistance through the OCEO. They will be responsible for ensuring high-quality support for partners and meaningful learning experiences for students.
The Program Manager will also help pilot a student consulting model within the SSW, engaging macro- and mezzo-focused students through structured practicum experiences, work-study opportunities, and research assistantships to respond to community needs. The Program Manager will mentor students and model best practices, coordinate with university collaborators and external consultants, and manage community partnerships receiving services to ensure that the OCEO delivers responsive, respectful, and effective support to communities.
Some travel to community partner sites within North Carolina required.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements :
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity or comparable background in independent academic or instructional activities, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. This experience may be related to the direction / oversight of programs that focus the academic and research resources of a higher education institution towards community or regional issues.
