The Public Defender Division of the Committee for Public Counsel Services, the public defender agency of Massachusetts, seeks a superior and district court practitioner for a Trial Attorney position in the Brockton Office, located in Plymouth County. CPCS provides legal representation and zealous advocacy to the indigent community. AGENCY OVERVIEW

CPCS is the state agency in Massachusetts responsible for providing an attorney when required to represent a person who cannot afford one. The agency provides representation in criminal, delinquency, youthful offender, family regulation, guardianship, mental health, sexually dangerous person, and sex offender registry matters, as well as appeals and post-conviction and post-judgment proceedings related to these matters. The clients we represent are diverse across many dimensions, requiring cultural competence and the ability to work with people of varying races, ethnicities, genders and / or sexual orientation identities, abilities, and limited English proficiency.

OFFICE OVERVIEW

The Brockton Office provides public defense services in Plymouth County and is located on Main Street in Brockton. Attorneys represent clients in the Plymouth and Brockton Superior Courts and in the four District Courts in the county : Plymouth, Brockton, Hingham, and Wareham. The office includes Trial Attorneys, Investigators, Social Services Advocates, and Administrative Assistants.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Public Defender Division seeks an experienced superior court practitioner to provide criminal defense representation in Plymouth County. The Trial Attorney will represent clients in the Superior and District Courts and may handle interlocutory appeals, civil commitments, witness testimony before the grand jury or trial court, and certain collateral matters as permitted by a supervisor. The caseload is expected to be predominantly serious Superior Court matters. The attorney may act as an informal mentor to other staff attorneys in the office.
