Job Summary :
Inpatient Genetic Counselor with the University of Colorado Denver, Anschutz (Denver, CO)
The Department of Pediatrics (DOP) seek an accomplished and experienced professional to serve as Inpatient Genetic Counselor (GC). This position supports the clinical activities of the Inpatient Genetics and Metabolism Service; and 2) provides independent Genetic Counseling in support of genetic and molecular testing requested by other specialties for inpatients at CHCO This role will include teaching and supervision of trainees. On a regular basis, the GC will meet with families of patients that died to provide support and counseling around postmortem testing results. Engage in teaching (5% of effort) and genetic counseling (95% of time) within the Department of Pediatrics, Genetics, and Metabolism. Teach in one to two courses per semester, including, but are not limited to, the following : GENC 6150 Congenital Malformations and Disorders of the Newborn (Spring semester); GENC 6211 Professional Issues in Genetic Counseling II (Spring semester). Participate in the education of genetic residents, medical students, pediatric residents, and genetic counseling students. Provide direct supervision and bedside teaching to Master’s students, Medical Genetics Residents, and Fellows on the Inpatient Rotation, including supervision and instruction in support of parents around the time of child demise, communication of results in intensive care settings, interactions with multiple medical providers in the inpatient setting, collection of family history, and pedigree analysis. Develop and present educational information to patients as well as to professionals. Enhance the Pediatric Genetics Inpatient Service by providing genetic and counseling expertise and guidance in testing and results interpretation, allowing medical providers to work top of scope. Enhance other Pediatric Inpatient Services by independently providing genetic counseling expertise and guidance in testing and results interpretation, allowing other medical specialists to work top of scope. Coordinate and facilitate testing for the optimal care of patients and their families in the inpatient setting, including rapid testing options. Provide inpatient genetic counseling to patients with known or suspected genetic disorders and inborn errors of metabolism. Provide genetic counseling and technical information in a comprehensive, understandable, nondirective manner to patients and families. Provide follow up counseling and care for discharged families and families of deceased infants and children.

Qualifications :
Minimum Qualifications :
This position requires a Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling and 3 years of experience as a Genetic Counselor. An ABGC Board certification is required.
