Staff Attorney or Senior Staff Attorney, Voting Rights Project
Join the Staff Attorney or Senior Staff Attorney role at ACLU , a term-limited, full-time position based in New York, NY or Washington, DC This two-year hybrid role requires in-office work two days per week or eight days per month.
The Voting Rights Project (VRP) is a legacy program launched in 1965 to defend the Voting Rights Act and protect voters of color. VRP has litigated more than 350 cases, including Supreme Court actions challenging voter suppression and discriminatory redistricting.
This position is represented by the ACLU Staff United bargaining unit.
What You'll Do
- Develop and litigate state and federal voting-rights cases, drafting pleadings, briefs, and legal memoranda, and participating in discovery, motion practice, hearings, and oral arguments.
- Analyze legislation for potential litigation or advocacy opportunities.
- Identify and work with prospective plaintiffs and witnesses, and develop new cases and non-litigation advocacy projects.
- Provide technical assistance and expert legal advice to ACLU attorneys, state affiliates, and external partners.
- Support legislative, policy, and campaign work to advance voting-rights goals, including public education, organizing, and coalition building.
- Engage in public speaking to articulate ACLU positions to diverse audiences.
- Collaborate with staff across ACLU's Legal, Communications, Affiliate, and National Political Advocacy Departments.
- Travel for litigation, conferences, and client development as required.
- Assist with special projects and other duties as assigned.
What You'll Bring
J.D. degree and demonstrated litigation experience; clerkships preferred.Bar membership in New York or willingness to seek membership promptly.Familiarity with voting-rights, racial-justice, and civil-liberties issues; a strong commitment to these causes.Analytical, research, and writing skills; ability to write and speak persuasively.Independence and teamwork; ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.Self-motivation, diligence, and collaboration across diverse teams.Compensation
