Job description

The Clinical Educator evaluates and contributes to oversight of  student performance during onsite immersions, plays a critical role in modeling and shaping the clinical skills of students, and is responsible for providing hands-on supervision of clinical skill development and support  during onsite immersions. The Clinical Educator  plays a vital role to ensure students are developing competency in treatment planning, clinical documentation, professional communication, and demonstration of ethical standards while practicing and demonstrating skills. In this role, the clinical educator will provide quality feedback helping students hone their clinical reasoning and problem-solving abilities as they develop clinical skills.

  • In this role, the Clinical Educator ensures clinical competencies by way of :
  • Interactive Workshops : Clinical Educators lead hands-on workshops where students  practice new techniques and tools in speech-language pathology. This could include but is not limited to the use of simulation technology or role-playing scenarios.
  • Discipline Experts : The Clinical Educators are experienced professionals and experts in the SLP field. They lead informative sessions planned in advance with MSLP faculty and leaders that provide students  with insights into current trends and best practices.
  • Technology Integration : Clinical Educators utilize the latest technology in their demonstrations and educational experiences at clinical immersives, such as telepractice platforms, speech analysis software, and augmented reality, to give students an innovative and modern perspective on the field.
  • Case Studies and Problem-Based Learning : Clinical Educators present real-life case studies that conform to ethical requirements of patient confidentiality  and engage students in clinical problem-solving activities during the immersive. This allows students to apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration : Clinical Educators speak to their experience and encourage collaboration with other healthcare disciplines, such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, and audiology in their presentations and discussions with students. Understanding a  team-oriented approach ensures students learn a holistic approach to patients and how to be an  integral part of a treatment team.
  • Feedback and Reflection : Clinical Educators provide  structured feedback sessions and engage in / encouragereflective practices to help students critically evaluate their performance and identify areas for improvement.
  • Research and Evidence-Based Practice : Clinical Educators incorporate real-life use of discipline research in evidence-based practice.
  • This role requires strong communication skills; an ability to work independently but collaborate with the MSLP academic team and leaders regarding what is presented, learned and evaluated in clinical immersives; , and organizational skills as well as a  a demonstrated commitment to student development and client care. By fostering a supportive learning environment, the Clinical Educator helps future professionals build the confidence and competence necessary to succeed in the field of CSD.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Attends required training (virtual and / or in-person) in preparation for onsite immersions
  • Compiles and disseminates student evaluation / performance reports at regular intervals as required by the Director of Clinical Education and / or the Dean / Program Director as requested.
  • Contributes to student clinical performance and evaluation.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all students, preceptors, associates, and / or university information as required.
  • Exercises care, proper use, and maintenance of department equipment and supplies used at the clinical immersive. Those in this role also identify unsafe conditions or those not conducive to learning, and make appropriate adjustments with the consultation of the Director of Clinical Education and / or the Dean / Program Director.
  • Keeps current records of student performance in approved university systems as applicable and requested by the Director of Clinical Education and / or the Dean / Program Director.Prepares and / or updates onsite immersion materials; copies and assembles binders, manuals, and packets as needed in order to deliver and evaluate clinical education at on site immersives.
  • Distributes clinical supplies as requested / needed.
  • Conducts job responsibilities in accordance with the standards set out in the University's Code of Ethical Conduct, Compliance Agreement, Sexual Harassment Policy or any of its policies and procedures, applicable federal and state laws, and applicable professional standards.
  • Maintains established department policies, and procedures and attends in-service and other required meetings as requested.
  • Maintains order, cleanliness and safety at work.
  • May perform other duties as assigned
  • Required Education, Certifications, and Licensures

  • Graduate degree with a major in Speech-Language Pathology or Communication Sciences & Disorders is required.
  • PhD / Ed.D. / SLPD in Speech-Language Pathology, Communication Sciences & Disorders or graduate degree in Speech-Language Pathology with Board Certification Specialty is preferred.
  • Degrees must be awarded by an institution that is accredited by a USDE-recognized regional accrediting body.
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP).
  • Must have licensure as a Speech-Language Pathologist in the state of residence.
  • Must meet and maintain the qualifications and standards set forth by any accreditation body that West Coast University is accredited by or in process of obtaining accreditation from, for area of expertise and expectations of faculty member as set forth in regulatory documents and any professional certifications deemed necessary to meet the requirements of the clinical / academic role.

  • Minimum two years of clinical supervision of speech-language pathology students at a clinical site or in higher education.
  • Minimum of two years in the field of speech-language pathology, including documented clinical practice.
  • Possesses clinical skills to cultivate a learner-centered environment and to foster excellence.
