The Youth Leadership (YL) Coordinator develops and coordinates youth leadership activities and programming designed to serve youth between the ages of 14-20 years of age. The incumbent reports to and coordinates with other elements of the Education Department, specifically the K-12 advisors and YES Supervisors, to develop special training and opportunities for all Hiaki youth and young adults. This position collaborates with the surrounding Yaqui communities / pueblos in Southern Arizona, as well as coordinating with local and regional Tribal Youth groups of similar nature to solicit special guests and speakers to share information that address issues and subjects that concern youth. The Youth Leadership program will provide mentoring and opportunities that are designed to promote positive attitudes, enhance positive self-image, confidence, maturity, and pride in being a productive member of society of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe.
Responsibilities :
- Recruit Hiaki youth to participate in scheduled / planned activities and programming.
- Form and monitor the Yaqui Youth Council and other leadership groups developed by the Education Department.
- Coordinate with YES offices to develop workshops, seminars, and conferences to encourage and motivate youth to stay in school.
- Provide oral and written monthly reports to the Tribal Ed. Director and staff.
- Serve as Community youth liaison in the interest and development of community youth services and projects.
- Coordinate enrichment projects, to expose youth to various leadership and career awareness experiences, provided or coordinated with various resources.
- Attend youth council regular and / or other meetings as requested.
- Provide an effective voice on behalf of youth of the Community.
- Advocate for youth issues and concerns with the Youth Council, Tribal Departments, and organizations where Hiaki youth participate.
- Provide amicable communication with the tribal community, programs, and youth in order to provide them with information and services.
- Encourage youth and community participation in community activities and events to meet the various needs and interests of youth to reinforce positive individual growth and development.
- Act as a resource person to youth when questions concerning the Pascua Yaqui Tribe are raised.
- Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as requested by supervisor or director.
Knowledge of :
The physical, mental, and social problems which accompany the youth in the Hiaki community.Mentoring principles.Counseling practices and principles.Local resources for educational and career development opportunities.Understanding and knowledge required to address all traditions and the heritage of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe with respect.Report preparation techniques.Applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations.Budget development and fiscal accountability standards required to establish and monitor the Youth Leadership program.Yaqui culture, customs, resources, and traditions and / or a willingness to learn.Skills and Abilities :
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with youth of varied economic, educational, and cultural backgrounds.Must maintain a positive attitude while communicating and interacting with youth.Recognizing problems, identifying alternative solutions, and making appropriate recommendations.Providing educational and counseling services to students.Using proper English, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.Prioritizing work and performing multiple tasks.Maintaining records and preparing reports.Must be willing to express ideas clearly, orally and in writing.Operate a variety of office equipment, including a computer and related software applications.Good communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, supervisor, management, Council members, and the public.Minimum Qualifications :
Bachelor's Degree in Education or a field relative to the positive contribution to youth programming, plus three (3) years of experience in working with youth.
Preferred Qualifications :
Trilingual in English / Spanish / Hiaki is preferred.Experience in mentoring youth is preferred.Experience with Social Media is a plus.About the Company :
