Job Summary

The Parks Maintenance Tech I IV performs general and increasingly skilled park maintenance work involving moderate responsibility, complexity, and variety. The successful candidate will perform a variety of strenuous manual labor including general grounds maintenance and routine landscaping at parks, recreation centers, and other sites. This is park / general maintenance work at the experienced level, involving operation of most equipment and specialized assignments requiring training and experience. Reporting to the Superintendent of Parks, the incumbent performs related work as assigned under direct and indirect supervision. The jobholder is an essential employee meaning they are responsible providing services that are critical functions required to maintain order, peace, safety, and the well-being of residents and visitors to the City of Frederick in the event of a critical incident. As such, the jobholder will be required to respond to emergencies as needed throughout the Department of Public Works when directed to do so.

Parks Maintenance Technician I $23.53 / hour

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Operates a variety of lawn maintenance equipment regularly.

Mows turf, trims and edges around walks, flower beds, and walls.

Prunes shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth or remove damaged leaves, branches, or twigs.

Plants grass, flowers, trees, and shrubs.

Sprays lawn, shrubs, and trees with fertilizer, herbicides, and insecticides.

Applies mulch and removes weeds around bushes, trees, and flower beds.

General custodial duties including cleaning public restrooms and removal of trash and litter throughout City-owned parks and recreational areas.

Disposes of debris to include tree branches, animal carcasses, and any other objects that may be deemed a safety hazard.

Assists in the general repair and maintenance of playgrounds and other park amenities.

Performs snow removal, including operating a snowplow, shoveling snow, and ice removal.

Responds to emergencies and inclement weather conditions as required.

Track daily assignments and keep supervisor up to date on work tasks.

Makes minor repairs on equipment such as lawn mower, small engines, and snow removal equipment.

Provides support for special events occurring outside of normal work hours.

Operates a motor vehicle on a regular basis observing legal and defensive driving practices.

Perform pre and post inspection of equipment.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and / or Experience : High school diploma, General Education Degree (GED) or equivalent. Six (6) months related experience and / or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Certificates and / or Licenses : Vehicle Operator's license with satisfactory driving record that meets insurability standards of the City's insurance carrier is required. The employee must maintain the license for the duration of their employment. Non-Commercial Intrastate Drivers Medical Examiner Certificate or the ability to obtain within 30 days of employment. Valid Pesticide Applicators I.D. or the ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.

Required Skills (Communication / Language; Mathematical; Computer; etc.) : Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Parks Maintenance Technician II $25.29 / hour

Essential Duties and Responsibilities : Same as Technician I.

Qualifications : Same as Technician I.

Required Certificates and / or Licenses : All requirements listed in Parks Maintenance Technician I. Commercial Driver's License (CDL - Class B) that meets insurability standards of the City's insurance carrier is required or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment. The employee must maintain the license for the duration of their employment.

Required Skills (Communication / Language; Mathematical; Computer; etc.) : Same as Technician I.

Parks Maintenance Technician III $27.19 / hour

Essential Duties and Responsibilities : Same as Technician I and II.

Performs supervisory responsibilities (occasionally) when immediate supervisor is absent. Assigns work, trains and oversees work of employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications : Same as Technician I and II.

Required Certificates and / or Licenses : All requirements listed in Parks Maintenance Technician II. Commercial Driver's License (CDL - Class B) that meets insurability standards of the City's insurance carrier is required. The employee must maintain the license for the duration of their employment.

Required Skills (Communication / Language; Mathematical; Computer; etc.) : Same as Technician I.

Other desirables : State of Maryland Roadside Tree Care Certification or State of Maryland Registered Pesticide Applicator Certification in one of the following categories : 3A (Ornamental Exterior); 3C (Turf); 6 (Right of Way).

Parks Maintenance Technician IV $29.23

Essential Duties and Responsibilities : Same as Technician I, II, and III.

Performs supervisory responsibilities and serves as Crew Leader when immediate supervisor is absent. Assigns work, trains and oversees work of employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications : Same as Technician I, II, and III.

Required Certificates and / or Licenses : All requirements listed in Parks Maintenance Technician III. Commercial Driver's License (CDL - Class A Tractor-Trailer Restricted) that meets insurability standards of the City's insurance carrier is required. The employee must maintain the license for the duration of their employment. State of Maryland Roadside Tree Care Certification or State of Maryland Registered Pesticide Applicator Certification in one of the following categories : 3A (Ornamental Exterior), 3C (Turf), 6 (Right of Way) or State of Maryland Temporary Traffic Control Manager Certification within 18 months of employment in this job classification.

Other desirables : State of Maryland Professional Fertilizer Applicator Certification. National Recreation & Park Association Certified Playground Safety Inspector.
