Orbital Engineering is seeking an Engineer I to support our Natural Gas Distribution group in our Hammond, In office . The Engineer I is an entry-level role responsible for performing engineering functions in design, drafting, and development for technical projects for the Natural Gas Team. This position focuses on developing foundational engineering skills, supporting project teams, and ensuring compliance with industry and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

  • Engineering and Design Support : perform engineering functions, including investigations, evaluations, calculations, and specifications, for design projects.
  • Assist in the development of engineering drawings, designs, and documentation under the supervision of senior engineers.
  • Apply standard engineering techniques and procedures to assignments requiring independent judgment.
  • Project Collaboration : collaborate with designers and project managers to define scope, monitor progress, and review design deliverables.
  • Supervise or obtain field data, client information, vendor information, and other inputs necessary for project execution.
  • Ensure all project activities align with client and industry standards, including :
  • 49 CFR Part 192 : Federal safety standards for natural gas pipelines.
  • ASME B31.8 : Gas Transmission and Distribution Piping Systems.
  • ASME B31 : General pressure piping standards.

Compliance And Quality Assurance

  • Support the preparation of designs that meet regulatory, safety, and quality standards.
  • Review and verify the accuracy of engineering calculations and design drawings.
  • Learning And Development

  • Participate in company training programs and mentorship opportunities to develop technical expertise.
  • Gain familiarity with industry-specific software, tools, and design processes.
  • Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering.
  • 0–3 years of experience in engineering or a related technical field.
  • Proficiency in engineering design software, such as AutoCAD, Plant 3D, or Civil 3D.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • This position requires the ability to pass a post-offer drug (including marijuana) and alcohol test in compliance with Federal regulations and is also subject to random testing as a condition of continued employment.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • EIT (Engineer in Training) or FE (Fundamentals of Engineering) certification preferred.
  • Familiarity with natural gas distribution systems or utility infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with utility and civil construction practices.
  • Knowledge of permitting processes and regulatory compliance for the natural gas industry.
  • Level Of Experience (Typical)

  • Entry-level role designed for individuals with 0–3 years of engineering experience.
  • Exposure to design, drafting, or related work during internships or prior roles is beneficial but not required.
