Job Title : Environmental Scientist 1 Location : Jackson, TN 38305 - Hybrid Estimated Duration : 01 / 04 / 2026 – 01 / 03 / 2027 Schedule : Monday–Friday | 8 : 00 AM – 4 : 30 PM CST | 7.5 hours / day Position Summary The Environmental Scientist 1 is an entry-level professional role responsible for performing technical environmental work including field inspections, permit compliance reviews, and documentation for Subsurface Sewage Disposal Systems and State Operating Permits. The position requires extensive fieldwork, map interpretation, technical reporting, and communication with diverse internal and external customers. Candidates must demonstrate strong organizational skills, time management, and the ability to work in rural areas, construction sites, and all weather conditions. Minimum Qualifications Education : Graduation from an accredited college / university with a bachelor's degree in one of the following : Environmental Science Physical Sciences (physics, chemistry, geology, meteorology) Ecology / Sustainability Life Sciences (biology, microbiology, health physics, biophysics) Environmental Health Pre-medicine Engineering Natural Resource–related field Additional Requirements : Valid driver’s license Ability to complete Radiological Health Division training (for applicable positions) Geological duties may require qualifying coursework or a current TN Geology License Biological positions require 24 semester hours in qualifying biology fields Preferred Qualifications Excellent customer service and communication skills Strong time management and organizational abilities Experience with field inspections, environmental compliance, or technical reporting Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, engineering, agronomy, biology, or related fields Key Responsibilities Acquire and maintain working knowledge of rules governing Subsurface Sewage Disposal Systems and State Operating Permits Read and interpret maps; create diagrams and provide technical guidance Write, review, and proofread technical reports and inspection documents Apply environmental regulations to compliance scenarios Maintain digital permit files, records, and documentation Operate a state vehicle to travel to remote sites for inspections Communicate effectively with diverse individuals and customer groups Maintain accuracy, follow protocols, and adhere to safety and regulatory standards Required Skills Map Reading & Interpretation : Advanced (7–9 years) Email Correspondence : Proficient (4–6 years) General Correspondence : Proficient (4–6 years) Data Entry : Proficient (4–6 years) Proofreading & Editing : Proficient (4–6 years) Technical Skills : Proficient (4–6 years) Verbal Communication : Proficient (4–6 years)
