Student Housing is a self-funded, large and complex campus department consisting of 6 housing communities and 3 support units, with more than 300 staff employees, 300-400 student employees and an annual operating budget of $120 million. Student Housing provides housing for approximately 9,000 undergraduates, graduate students and their families in over 250 buildings and approximately 3.3 million sq. ft.

Currently, Student Housing houses 51% of UCI's enrolled students (in conjunction with American Campus Communities, UCI's 3rd party housing partner) with a goal of housing 60% as part of the campus Long Range Development Plan (LRDP). Student Housing also provides maintenance and repair services to student residents.

Your Role on the Team

The Manager of Community Assignments utilizes advanced, specialized expertise to provide direction and guidance to lower-level Student Services professionals to increase housing placements within Graduate and Family Housing (GFH). Working independently, they resolve the most complex cases / situations. They have responsibility for Graduate and Family Housing Community Assignments, a discreet, complex Student Life & Development function and content area. The incumbent provides vision, leadership, and oversees the day-to-day operations for Graduate and Family Housing's Community Assignments, which includes coordination of assignments across three Graduate and Family Housing Properties and coordinating with American Campus Communities. Provides high care direct service, support, and referral in response to individual or community concerns. Directly and indirectly supervises career staff including Assignments Coordinators and paraprofessional / contract / student staff who work at the service desk. The GFH Manager of Community Assignments shares responsibility for a housing unit operation with annual operating budgets. Provides limited non-office hours / after-hours support for Housing Assistants, Late Night Housing Assistants, and other Student Housing staff on a periodic / rotational basis. Responds to after-hour situations as necessary. Serves as a member of the Graduate and Family Housing and Student Housing Emergency Response Team. Assesses community emergencies and determines appropriate actions. Under the general direction of the Director of Community Assignments, the incumbent serves as a member of the

Graduate and Family Housing Leadership Team and collaborates with other managers to establish strategic plans and objectives affecting GFH family life and development across the organization. This includes developing shared priorities and advancing goals in support of student enrollment / retention, development, and inclusive excellence.

What It Takes to be Successful

Required :

  • Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Advanced knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles.
  • Advanced knowledge of Student Affairs / Student Life specialization or similar skills from a parallel field.
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
  • Advanced abilities in project management, problem identification and reasoning skills.
  • Advanced ability to develop original ideas to solve both individual resident, community wide, and organizational concerns.
  • Advanced knowledge of procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise and lead. Ability to create, improve, and monitor work standards, procedures and systems that ensure effective service delivery. Experience and skill in selecting, training, supervising, and evaluating student and professional staff.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Advanced skills in active listening, critical thinking, negotiation, problem solving, reasoning, organizing, multitasking and intercultural competence. Ability to compose reports, letters, instructions, and other documents with attention to clarity, tone, composition, and mechanics.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
  • Analytical / problem-solving / decision making / implementation skills.
  • Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes. Skills in organization and customer service to effectively manage multiple important priorities. Proven ability to organize department work functions in an efficient and effective manner. Ability to set priorities to manage multiple processes under strict administrative deadlines and follow through with implementation. Skills in postimplementation analysis and ability to implement improvements.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of constituencies including administrators, staff, students, and vendors. Ability to work cooperatively and effectively in group / team settings.
  • Skill and experience in budget management, basic accounting methods, and developing budget projections.
  • Astute political acumen regarding sensitive and high-visibility issues. Ability to rely on mastery of policies combined with understanding of competing variables and interests.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Master's degree preferred and / or equivalent combination experience / training.
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Minimum of 6 years of progressively responsible experience in student services, property management, and / or leadership in other similar roles / fields.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience with policy, data, budget, and / or technical writing development and implementation.

Special Conditions :

  • Must pass a background check and DMV clearance required.
  • Per the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA), this position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter. The selected candidate will be required to report known or suspected child abuse or neglect as defined by CANRA and will be required to sign a Statement Acknowledging Requirement to Report Child Abuse prior to commencing employment.   • Must be willing to assist in the event of an emergency / natural disaster.
  • Must be willing to work occasional overtime, nights and weekends.
  • This person serves as an occasional manager on-call to provide support and assistant after-hours.
  • Must maintain CPR and First Aid Certification

    The expected pay range for this recruitment is $71,600- $80,908 (Annual).
