Assistant Director of Transportation
To enable each student, through safe and efficient transportation practices, to take full advantage of the complete range of curricular and extracurricular activities offered by the District's schools.
Acts as a liaison with parents for concerns and special requests. Approves and forwards transportation service invoices to the accounting department. Assists District Administration with boundary change proposals as needed by the student population. Assists in developing/maintaining budgetary needs for appropriate programs. Attends appropriate committee and staff meetings. Authorizes purchases in accordance with budgetary limitations and District rules. Completes and dispatches insurance reports and absences of Transportation employees. Conforms to all state laws and regulations regarding school buses in transportation and the maintenance of all district vehicles. Cooperates with school principals and others responsible for planning special school trips. Coordinates the planning and administering of in-service/training activities for appropriate personnel. Coordinates with Executive Directors on population growth. Develops and administers a transportation program to meet all the requirements of the daily instructional program and extracurricular activities. Develops and maintains lines of communication between staff, parents, and other agencies. Develops recommendations for future equipment and personnel needs based on a survey of resident students, distance, and grade levels. Develops recommendations for future transportation needs based on an annual survey of resident students. Effectively communicates to the Executive Director program-related activities, events, and concerns. Keeps abreast of changes and developments in the profession by attending professional meetings, reading professional journals, and other publications, and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field. Maintains a relationship with the Arizona Department of Public Safety- Student Transportation Unit. Maintains all District-owned equipment and develops plans for preventative maintenance. Maintains safety standards in conformance with Federal and State Insurance regulations and develops a program of preventative safety. Maintains transportation budget. Prepares bus routes for all schools in the District. Produces appropriate, high quality, written material for distribution to students, staff, and parents. Recruits, trains, and supervises all transportation personnel and makes recommendations on their employment, transfer, promotion and release. Submits all reports required by state authorities (ADE, ADEQ, The Trust, DPS Student Transportation.) Takes an active role in solving discipline problems occurring on school buses. Works with the administrative team to assure that all stakeholders are informed regarding student transportation needs across the district. Performs other duties as assigned.
High School Diploma or Equivalent (R) Certifiable through the Arizona Department of Public Safety Student Transportation Unit to operate a School Bus in the state of Arizona (R) Certifiable through the Arizona Department of Public Safety-Student Transportation unit as a Classroom, Behind the Wheel, and Physical Performance Test Instructor (R) Clean driving/background record (Certified 5 year Motor Vehicle Report) (R) Current Arizona Commercial Driver License with S (School Bus)-Endorsement, P (Passenger) Endorsement, Air Brakes Endorsement Experience in staff supervision (R) Valid Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card (R) Demonstrates ability to administer programs and budgets (R) Demonstrates ability to work effectively in a team setting (R) Demonstrates aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities (R) Demonstrates physical stamina and health (R) Knowledgeable of all local, state and federal regulations for operations of Commercial Motor Vehicles-Including MAP-21 and FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearing House (R) Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, rules, regulations, statutes, policies and procedures (R) Knowledge of current issues and practices pertinent to assigned areas (R) Knowledge of management principles, practices, and techniques (R) Outstanding interpersonal skills (R) Outstanding written and oral communication skills (R) Skill in leadership, training and decision making (R) Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications (R) Understanding of and/or experience with management and accountability systems (R)
The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions require the following physical requirements: Very heavy work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes. The worker is required to have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles or heavy equipment.

Exempt: 12-month contract Salary and employment terms based on the Director Placement Chart as established by the Governing Board.
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with District policy.

The placement chart reflects up to (6) six years of experience. The District will provide compensation aligned with applicable years of experience.
Leadership Development Base Pay amounts are paid either at the end of the school year in one lump sum in June or in the bi-weekly paycheck based on the election of the employee at the time of contract acceptance. $6,650
The Performance Award of $2,480 is based on execution of the scorecard process and is paid in one lump sum in June.
Total Contract Days: 258 (includes 18 paid holidays and 3 unpaid holidays, Work Calendar A).
Number of Vacation Days: 22 (Trust Policy 4-302)
Number of paid sick days earned per year: 5 (Trust Policy 4-302.B).
Number of paid personal leave days earned per year: 11 (Trust Policy 4-302.C).
If employee acquires Doctorate said employee will receive a $1,000 stipend upon conferral of degree distributed in each biweekly paycheck during the term of employment.
The following positions are eligible for a $3,600 car allowance: Directors of Teaching and Learning, Facilities, Food Services, Special Education, Technology, Transportation, School Safety, Construction; Assistant Directors of Facilities, Special Education, and Transportation.
