Job Description
Job Description
We are looking for a Medical Laboratory Technician / Technologist (Full-Time) to join our in-house laboratory team. This role is perfect for an organized detail-oriented individual that enjoys the comforts of the lab environment but also enjoys interacting with patients face-to-face. Many of our employees have been with the practice for many years due to the enjoyable working environment, entertaining coworkers, and supportive relationships with the management and partners.
A little bit about our practice :
Spring Valley Pediatrics has been providing primary care services to children, adolescents, and young adults in the greater Washington DC area for more than 90 years. Our office is open 365 days a year, including weekends and holidays, with a physician on-call 24 / 7. We love getting to know our patients and their families here at our office and over the phone. Clear effective communication between the patient, nurse, and pediatrician is one of our top priorities. Our staff and experienced team of physicians are committed to providing individualized care to each of our patients, reinforced by our emphasis on care continuity. Our patients see or speak to their personal primary care provider and nurse each time they visit or call. This consistency as each patient grows-up with us allows our staff to strengthen their personal relationships with the family, build rapport with the patient, and provide a comfortable atmosphere for discussion during each visit.
At SVP we are proud to have a small moderate-complexity CLIA compliant clinical laboratory staffed each day of operation that collects and tests a variety of patient specimens in order to assess, diagnose, or treat a wide range of conditions. The laboratory's additional accreditation by COLA, an organization that regulates and inspects laboratories for quality and excellence beyond the minimal requirements, was renewed in 2024.
Hours of Operation :
- Monday - Friday : Office is open from 9am - 5pm. Lab staff arrive between 8 : 15am and 10am as assigned. Lab staff staying beyond 5pm to finish any testing from the last visits of the day usually arrive after 9am.
- Saturday, Sunday, Holidays : We are open for sick patient visits with patient care starting at 9am, but usually close around 1 to 2pm. Full -time staff are REQUIRED to join the rotation for weekends when fully trained (~every third weekend).
Requirements / Education
Responsibilities :
1. Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control, safety, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
2. Follow laboratory procedures for specimen collection (including phlebotomy and capillary skin puncture), handling and processing, test analysis, reporting and review.
3. Perform hearing and vision screenings on patients.
4. Administer tuberculin PPD skin tests.
5. Order and prepare specimens for send-out testing in reference lab computer systems.
6. Review quality control reports and charts, instrument maintenance logs, and proficiency testing documentation for completion and accuracy.
7. Inventory supplies and notify supervisor of what is needed. Ensure supplies are used according to expiration date order and are not used beyond that date unless approved by lab manager.
8. Perform proficiency tests in the same manner as patient samples to ensure result quality.
9. Perform and document completion of quality control procedures, preventive maintenance and calibrations on analyzers as required.
10. Follow established laboratory policies when test results are not within established levels of performance.
11. Document all corrective actions taken when test systems do not perform as expected or there is a deviation from performance specifications including troubleshooting.
12. Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting results and correct, if possible. Notifies supervisor or lab manager of any and all problems.
13. Review reference lab invoices to ensure all send out tests have been charged. Flag anything that needs reviewed by the lab manager or billing
Office.
14. Ensure biohazard waste is appropriately sealed and labeled on pickup days. Asks driver for supplies when needed.
15. Assist physicians, nurses, bookkeeping, etc. as much as possible when time allows.
16. Other duties as assigned by the lab manager, lab director or office manager.
