The Greater Manchester Region has approximately 2,500 employees. POSITION SUMMARY :
Surgical Assistant II is responsible for performing the duties of moving surgical equipment and furniture, cleaning tasks, linen supply management, schedule distribution, errands and ensuring effective communication between themself, the managers, the patients, peers, staff, physicians, and other hospital departments. Is a resource for simple and complex equipment room set-ups. Assists in maintaining a safe and clean environment. Identifies specific needs of the patient and anesthesia care provider in relation to anesthesia supplies needed prior, during, and after a surgical procedure, in collaboration with an anesthesia care provider. Reports to the Clinical Nurse Manager.
COMPETENCIES :
- Must be able to read and communicate effectively in English.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES :

1. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and promotes positive patient outcomes.
2. Communicates appropriately and clearly to team leader, co-workers, and other members of the health
care team.
3. Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
4. In collaboration with surgical team, participates in activities to accomplish efficient room turnover
including cleaning of floor, furniture, and equipment; removal of used equipment, supplies, and
instrumentation; providing appropriate equipment for next procedure.
5. Maintains the cleanliness and supply levels of assigned work areas before and after procedures.
6. Stocks all designated areas including linen, oxygen equipment and cleaning supplies.
7. Unpacks and puts away supplies delivered to OR front desk area.
8. Obtains beds & stretchers according to procedure & specific patient needs. Independently and safely
transports patients to and from designated areas.
9. Assists the nursing staff with patient care as needed in assigned areas.
10. Performs Clips reps, on male patients according to procedure.
11. Supports efficient department operations, answers phone and effectively communicates messages to the
appropriate individuals.
12. Demonstrates knowledge of Infection Control policies for Anesthesia / O.R. equipment; appropriately and
independently cleans and identifies need for repair of anesthesia equipment; communicates issues to
Nurse Manager.
13. Demonstrates knowledge of advanced / complex room and equipment set up, i.e., shoulder and knee
positioners, robotics, minimally invasive set-ups.
14. Maintains par levels of anesthesia / O.R. supplies and medications; orders supplies and medications as
needed, unpacks and puts away; communicates supply issues to Nurse Manager.
15. Checks and fills anesthesia carts with nets and supplies in the OR, OB, and GI units.
16. Maintains tissue freezer and temperature logs in compliance with regulatory standards.
17. Performs daily tissue test, checks temperature and relative humidity in OR suites.
18. Is a resource for equipment and room set up.
19. Acts as a mentor, precepting other employees in the Surgical Assistant role.
20. Is able to work independently, to validate and verify inventory and medications.
