A Director of Nursing role is considered to be one of the most ambitious nursing career pathways you can pursue. This management level position entails managing the administrative component of the nursing department.
To do so, you will need extensive education, on the job training, experience, and leadership skills to succeed as a director of nursing. If you are a nurse who prefers the challenge of a clinical management role overseeing day-to-day patient care, you may find this to be the right career path for you.
Basic Function :
A Director of Nursing in training will dive into the basic functions of the nursing services within the facility. They will learn the functions of a facility as it refers to the cultural, clinical and financial standpoints. Additionally, they will touch base on functions that relate to nursing functions such as medical records, infection control, consultant services, medical professionals, and state and federal agencies.
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS, AND CREDENTIALS
EDUCATION :
Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing.
Valid licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California
Current CPR training from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association
EXPERIENCE :
Experience as an RN within a Skilled Nursing facility
At least two years of experience in a supervisory role
Savvy to electronic medical record, PCC platform preferred
Knowledge of the nursing services provided with skilled nursing which could include assessments, evaluations, care plans and process of documentation
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION :
Upon completion of the training program, the employee must be able to perform each essential function effectively to be successful in a Director of Nursing position
Effectively able to communicate and interpret policies and procedures to nursing leadership
Participate within management team meetings to discuss resident status and / or complaints, or personnel matters
Will learn the fundamental skills to effectively deliver compassionate quality care through nursing supervision
Upon completion of the training program will be able to demonstrate knowledge of key quality indicators, proactive measures and be able to effectively implement systems to achieve / and / or surpass company thresholds
Will assist in performing quality rounds to observe care provided to residents
Participates in the scheduling of nursing staff and ensures regulatory compliance, resident needs and company goals are met
Ensures 24 / 7 communication with nursing staff to support nursing tasks in the facility
Develops relationships with consultants and ensures recommendations are implemented and / or communicated
Works closely with the facility Medical Director and Physicians
Augments schedules of self and nursing leadership to meet the changing needs of the facility
Shows initiative in managing the nursing process as it pertains to the needs and clinical outcomes of all residents
Interacts well with CDPH
Stewards narcotic storage and destruction
Acts as the ‘second in command” in absence of the Administrator
Works closely with the Administrator to ensure positive clinical and financial outcomes of the nursing department
Keeps abreast of new regulations and best practices
Communicates all new information and needed remediation to licensed nurses
Signs for the completion of the MDS in the absence of an RN MDS Coordinator
Assists with writing Plans of Correction
Implements Plans of Correction and monitors effectiveness
Initiates the completion of tasks and interventions
Leads nursing management in the delivery of care
Addresses resident and responsible party concerns regarding resident care
Reports areas of concern to the Administrator
Recruits, trains and onboards new nursing staff
Maintaining resident records and data as confidential
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS :
Ideal candidate to have knowledge of current federal and state laws and regulations that apply to the practice of nursing within a skilled nursing facility setting. Strong organizational and time management skills and the ability to prioritize responsibilities. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions, along with the ability to read, analyze and interpret financial reports and legal documents.
