Definition

Under the general supervision of the Fleet / Warehouse Supervisor, performs major and minor mechanical repairs on gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and construction equipment under both field and shop conditions. Perform journeyman-level welding and mechanical repair work. Uses a variety of tools and equipment to fabricate, repair, and maintain metal structures, equipment, and vehicles. Performs related work as required.

Examples of Essential Duties

  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical problems in District automobiles, trucks, and construction equipment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, tune-ups, and safety inspections; ensure compliance with smog and motor carrier regulations.
  • Replace or repair faulty components such as bearings, lights, relays, alternators, clutches, seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, and steering mechanisms.
  • Install and maintain special equipment on District vehicles and equipment.
  • Overhaul, repair, and adjust engines, transmissions, differentials, clutches, and other major components.
  • Safely operate hoists, cranes, forklifts, and trucks to transport materials and components.
  • Operate shop and machine tools, including drill presses, metal benders, punches, and grinders.
  • Perform skilled welding, brazing, cutting, and fabrication of metal parts and equipment using acetylene and electrical tools in accordance with safety standards.
  • Design, layout, fabricate, assemble, and repair gates, valves, ladders, rails, machinery, and structures used in irrigation and domestic water systems.
  • Maintain work, time, and materials records; prepare clear and accurate reports as required.
  • Monitor supply and equipment needs, informing the Supervisor of required materials, tools, or temporary help.
  • Ensure safe work practices are followed at all times.
  • Respond to emergencies and perform overtime work as required.

Qualifications

Knowledge of

  • Operation and maintenance of gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, and related systems.
  • Hydraulic, electrical, and small-engine systems used in automotive and construction equipment.
  • Safe work practices, welding safety, and hazard mitigation procedures.
  • Applicable laws and codes related to vehicle inspection, smog, and safety operations.
  • Tools, equipment, and procedures used in metal work and mechanical repair.
  • Welding and metal fabrication techniques, including arc, gas, mig welding, brazing, and cutting.
  • Ability to

  • Diagnose mechanical and electrical problems using standard testing equipment.
  • Maintain accurate service and repair records.
  • Safely operate a variety of shop and field equipment, including welding and diagnostic tools.
  • Perform journeyman-level welding, fabrication, and mechanical repair work.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Work safely in confined spaces, elevated areas, and adverse weather conditions.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions in English.
  • Read blueprints, perform basic layout and design work, and estimate materials and equipment needs.
  • Work effectively with minimal supervision and use sound judgment in prioritizing assignments.

  • EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    Education

    Equivalent to completion of twelfth grade, supplemented by specialized training for diagnostic equipment.

    Experience

    Four years of experience performing repair work on automotive, heavy truck and construction equipment, and journeyman-level welding and metal equivalent to journeyman level.

    NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must provide two acceptable forms of identification as proof of citizenship.
  • Possession of a valid California driver's license with the ability to obtain a Class A license within six (6) months of hire or transfer,
  • Maintain a good motor vehicle driving record, free from multiple or serious violations or accidents for at least two (2) years.
  • A Department of Motor Vehicles "Driver Record Information" printout will be required at the time of hire.
  • Possession of an appropriate E7018 structural steel welding certification within 6 months of hire or transfer.
  • Must pass a chemical and physical examination prior to employment.
  • Must be available for emergency response, overtime and varied work schedules as required.
  • TYPICAL PHYSICAL AND MENTAL ACTIVITIES

    Work requires physical strength, stamina, coordination, and the ability to perform heavy manual labor. Duties involve standing, walking, bending, climbing, kneeling, reaching, lifting, and carrying objects up to 60 pounds. Employees must be able to work in confined spaces, at elevated heights, and in varying outdoor and shop environments, including exposure to heat, noise, vibration, fumes, and dust.

    Requires normal or corrected-to-normal vision and hearing. Must be able to operate District vehicles and equipment safely, use hand and power tools effectively, and communicate clearly in English both verbally and in writing. Work may involve irregular hours, emergency call-outs, and extended periods of physical activity.
