Job Summary

Savannah State University seeks qualified applicants for Assistant Professor of Social Work. This is a full-time, 10-month tenure track position in the Bachelor of Social Work program. The primary emphasis is on teaching generalist, social work practice. Highly desired are candidates with a specialty emphasis in mental health, behavioral health, addictions, military social work, or some combination; may be directed to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically delineated in this description.

Note : In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required eligibility verification form upon hire. The position does not offer sponsorship for employment visas.

Responsibilities

  • Teach courses (24 credit hours per academic year) within the range equivalent to contact hours per week per semester for all tenure-track faculty during the academic year.
  • Participate in student recruitment and retention efforts.
  • Manage and utilize online platforms effectively.
  • Teach, engage, inspire, and assess all learners through innovative teaching practices. The incumbent must be able to create a learning environment that supports student success and instructional improvement activities.
  • Work within a community that values teamwork and shared goals in support of student success through initiatives that promote community partnerships and activities that lead to improvements in educational outcomes for students.
  • Participate in assessment planning and reporting efforts.
  • Maintain regularly scheduled office hours each week during the semester.
  • Provide academic advisement to students as assigned within the department.
  • Participate in department and division meetings.
  • Engage in activities to promote the advancement of the department, college / school, and university.
  • Engage in activities to promote individual professional development.
  • Participate in faculty governance systems of the campus and university
  • Attend official functions to include but not limited to Commencement, Founders Day, and Honors Convocation.
  • Engage in activities to promote the overall advancement of the university such as involvement in education programs, community service (university engagement activities), and student activities.
  • Meet deadlines to facilitate efficiency in the operation of the university.
  • Engage with industry partners, professionals in the field, alumni, and the broader community to support workforce development initiatives.
  • Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Social Work / Social Welfare or a Doctorate of Social Work (DSW). The candidate must also have a Master of Social Work or Master of Social Welfare degree from an accredited Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) program with a minimum of two years, post-MSW practice experience.
  • Two (2) years of teaching experience at the college / university level
  • Demonstrated evidence of research, scholarship, and / or grantsmanship

    The proposed salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.

  • Knowledge of social work theories, principles, and evidence-based practices.
  • Knowledge of human behavior in the social environment and psychosocial development.
  • Knowledge of social welfare policies, programs, and their historical and contemporary contexts.
  • Knowledge of research methodologies, data analysis, and scholarly writing in social work.
  • Knowledge of ethical standards and professional codes of conduct.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care and appropriate forms of intervention.
  • Knowledge of accreditation standards (e.g., CSWE) and curriculum development requirements.
  • Skills in interpersonal relations and classroom management
  • Skills in designing and delivering engaging lectures and seminars.
  • Skills in conducting scholarly research and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Skills in integrating technology and digital resources into teaching.
  • Skills in assessing student learning and providing constructive feedback.
  • Skills in oral and written communication for academic and public audiences.
  • Ability to mentor and advise students on academic and career paths.
  • Ability to create a supportive classroom environment.
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues and contribute to departmental initiatives.
  • Ability to adapt teaching methods to all learning styles.
