Urologists are specialized Physicians with a focus on the urogenital systems in men, women, and children. To become a Urologist, you must complete extensive education that can take up to 13 years to complete.  
  
Similar to other specialized Physicians, the first step to become a Urologist is by completing an undergraduate degree. Most aspiring Physicians study in the sciences where Medical Schools have prerequisite courses to consider. These vary between universities, so hopeful students need to pay close attention to the requirements at each institution. Prerequisite courses are more often than not in the sciences and maths, and since med-school can be very competitive, students must maintain a high-grade point average.  
  
To be admitted to medical school, students are must write the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), which is a standardized test focusing on sciences, critical thinking, and problem-solving. The MCAT is a requirement for medical school applications, and the basis of acceptance falls on differing merits per application. 
  
While attending medical school, students must enroll for and achieve acceptance for a urology residency program. As a resident, students are supervised closely by other doctors, learning, and practicing the skills required for Urologists. Once the residency is complete Urologists will also have the option to do a fellowship to become specialized in a specific area of Urology.  
  
Following the completion of all the education required to become a Urologists all Urologists need to apply for a state license. The requirements will vary across the country so it is important to pay attention to what is required where you wish to practice, however a license is mandatory in order to practice.
