Job Description - Patient Care Services

TITLE : ManagerNursing Resource Services

OVERVIEW : This position is an exempt professional managerial position. The Manager will provide management and support to a unit or units with 24-hour accountability;

provide appropriate resources to achieve optimal clinical outcomes and a high level of patient satisfaction; and supports a collaborative model of care focus on delivery of high level, autonomous, professional practice.

AREA OF ASSIGNMENT : Patient Care Services

HOURS OF WORK : Hours vary to cover service needs (evening or weekend hours required occasionally).

RESPONSIBLE TO : Director of Inpatient Services

PREREQUISITES :

Current Washington State RN licensure is required.

Bachelor's Degree required, Master's degree preferred.

Minimum of three (3) years management experience preferred.

Three (3) years clinical experience within the last seven (7) years required. Knowledge of fiscal management systems and techniques.

Experience in human resource management practices including supervision and staff development.

QUALIFICATIONS :

Ability to communicate and work effectively with the physical and emotional development of all ages served.

Evidence of excellent communication and education skills, communicating effectively in oral and written form in the English language.

Ability to comprehend, execute and act within scope of practice.

Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills in a diverse population.

Able to handle multiple demands and competing priorities.

Ability to collaborate and work in a multidisciplinary team environment.

UNIQUE PHYSICAL / MENTAL DEMANDS, ENVIRONMENT, AND WORKING CONDITIONS : Requires full range of body motion, including handling and lifting patients.

Manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Requires ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 40 pounds in emergency situations.

Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires ability to communicate effectively in oral and written fashion.

Requires working under changing conditions or working variable hours. Requires exposure to communicable diseases or body fluids and other conditions common to the clinical environment.

Unique Job Functions

Manage the daily operations of the Clinical Administrative Resources staff, who serve as members of the PCS Administration and have the accountability and responsibility for the delivery of quality patient care and throughput on a house wide basis, the STAT nurse and other areas as assigned.

Provide leadership in establishing a customer-focused service consistent with the Medical Center's initiatives and plan.

Serve as a role model in setting a standard of practice within VMC and in meeting all obligations of management, including timely completion of reports and adherence to budgetary targets.

Provide administrative direction and evaluation of all the program activities.

Meet with nursing and support staff to provide direction concerning the management of patients in the program.

Intervene with staff for problem solving in case management, service priority and conflict resolution.

Consult with the program leadership in developing quality indicators and evaluation for performance and processes within their assignment.

Consult with VMC medical and administrative leadership to assist in recruiting staff members to the program whenever necessary.

Hiring, directing and developing team members.

Actively participates in process improvement meetings and work groups as assigned by Director.

Consult and participate actively in Joint Commission and other accrediting bodies' compliance efforts.

Oversee scheduling, turnarounds, communication, reporting, personnel, supplies, equipment, etc. to improve operational efficiencies.

Supervise staff in compliance with policies and procedures, to include : interview, hiring, orientation, performance appraisals, initiate and conduct disciplinary actions as needed, train, provide for in-service and continuing education of staff, assure appropriate staffing levels, to assure effective department operations.

Schedule and coordinate staff; participate in establishing goals, performance standards and expectations; monitor and provide appropriate verbal and written feedback.

Maintains current knowledge of health care trends and regulatory requirements.

Establishes and maintains effective relationships with internal and external customers.

Builds a culture of quality and patient safety.

Aligns staff resources to appropriate patient care needs.

Prepares operating budget for service area with input from the PCS management team

Maintains all areas of responsibility within budget and / or provides appropriate justification for variances.

Prepares annual capital equipment budget mindful of state-of-the-art technology.

Makes purchasing decisions based on cost / benefit analysis.

Applies Valley Service Culture Guidelines in daily work and addresses all conflict in a timely manner using VMC Service Culture Guidelines.

Partners with all disciplines to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

Manages a comprehensive communication plan to ensure information is shared with staff in a timely manner.

Participates in the development of annual Patient Care Services and Perioperative Schedules and attends staff / in-services meetings.

Performs walking hospital rounds.

Develops, implements and monitors compliance to policies, protocols, procedures and standards.

Completes reports in a timely manner.

Maintains clinical skills and works clinically as necessary.
