The Department of Clinical Sciences in Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University invites applications for a full-time assistant clinical professor in emergency and critical care (ECC).

The successful applicant will be responsible for teaching and supervising veterinary students and house officers; providing advanced referral and specialty medical care;

and engaging in scholarship. In addition to clinical rotation teaching, formal instruction in the DVM program and for house officers is expected, and there are opportunities for pedagogical innovation and leadership associated with the current curriculum revision.

This position is on the continuous term (tenure-equivalent) track.

The selected candidate will join seven other ACVECC Diplomates, 12 residents, and 15 rotating interns who provide care in the Foster Hospital for Small Animals (FHSA).

The ECC program supports an emergency service that receives approximately 15,000 cases each year and an adjacent ICU that houses approximately 2,000 critically ill patients per year.

Services are provided 24 hours / 7 days a week. We are an open ICU and collaborate with our colleagues in other specialty services to provide the highest quality patient care.

Three faculty are on service each day. One covers the ICU, one covers the ER, and one comes in mid afternoon for a faculty swing shift.

Weekends are overseen by one ECC faculty member on a rotational basis. The ECC team works collaboratively to foster a stimulating and innovative clinical environment.

An established Clinical Trials Office broadly coordinates ongoing active investigations and evaluations of new therapies, medical devices, and diagnostic tests.

Additional features include ACVECC Veterinary Trauma Center Level 1 designation, VECCS Level 1 Facility certification, a dialysis service, a 1.

5T MRI, helical multi-slice CT (being upgraded to 160-slice), fully equipped nuclear medicine suite, C-arm fluoroscopy, portable radiography, laparoscopy / arthroscopy, interventional radiology suite, minimally invasive procedures service, and a Varian linear accelerator with cone beam CT, a multi-leaf collimator and stereotactic radiotherapy.

This position requires at least 30 weeks of assigned clinical time (including evenings and weekends). The remaining activities are allocated depending on the interests of the candidate, with 3 - 6 weeks for service-related activities, 5 - 10 weeks for research and scholarly activity, and 5 - 8 weeks for off-clinic teaching.

Vacation and university time off is 5 weeks.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must hold a DVM (or equivalent) degree and must have completed an American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC) or European College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ECVECC) approved residency prior to the start date.

The position requires certification by ACVECC or ECVECC, with certification being achieved prior to or no later than two years after the initial hire date.

Preference will be given to individuals who hold ACVECC or ECVECC board certification and who have post-residency clinical experience.

Evidence of collegiality is required. The ability to excel in clinical and didactic teaching is expected, as is a demonstration of pursuit of scholarly activity appropriate for a clinical track position.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Cummings School is situated in Grafton, MA on a 600-acre pastoral campus, forty-five minutes west of Boston and next door to Worcester, the second largest city in Massachusetts.
