Overview

World Wildlife Fund (WWF), one of the world's leading conservation organizations, seeks a Senior Director, Climate Communications. The Senior Director will lead the development and execution of short- and long-term external communications strategies that advance the organization's climate objectives, support resource mobilization, and link to the broader communications and outreach strategy of the organization. The incumbent serves as the point of contact on internal and external communications related to the Climate Goal team and coordinates climate-related communications with others goal teams. The Senior Director is a key partner in strategy development and implementation.

Salary Range : $144,600 - $207,900

Responsibilities

The Senior Director, Climate Communications leads strategic communications for the Climate Team, including message development, internal communication, event participation, social media posting and fundraising support. Working with senior leadership, the Senior Director helps cultivate a unique WWF brand and voice for climate change mitigation and adaptation work. S / he / they develops and leads on communications strategies / plans that help deliver climate outcomes and raises brand awareness among key stakeholders. Ensures consistency in climate change messaging across the organization. Identifies content ideas and opportunities to reach multiple and diverse audiences (e.g., donors, corporate and program partners, policy influencers etc.) Manages climate communications staff.

Leads the WWF-US participation in major climate conferences including New York Climate Week and the UNFCC Climate COP in collaboration with participating teams across the organization. Organizes WWF-US hosted events and coordinates schedule of SVP, Climate on panels and events.

  • Identifies key events to maximize visibility and strengthen relationships with donors, corporate partners, government institutions, and other stakeholders. Track, share, and make recommendations regarding climate communication activities and priorities across WWF-US and Network communications teams.
  • Partners with SVP, Climate; Deputy Goal Lead, Climate; and subject matter experts to develop and implement climate communications plan which amplifies climate programs and strategies.
  • Develops messaging, content, and stories for Climate Goal Team projects and communication needs, as well as knowledge management of programmatic activities and climate data. The content is for a variety of WWF and 3

party channels (i.e. website, social media, webinars, podcasts) and various types of collateral (videos, blogs, op eds, brochures).

  • Coordinates climate-related messaging with communicators from Forests, Food, Freshwater, Oceans, Policy, Science, Development and Private Sector Engagement teams to ensure a unified organizational approach to climate communications. Represent the climate team on organization-wide Goal Communicator Network.
  • Collaborates with Media team by providing strategic knowledge of industry outlets to support media outreach and other external communications.
  • Proactively identifies executive communication opportunities for SPV, Climate and Climate management team members including speaking engagements, social media posts, media interviews and participation in external events.
  • Produces high-quality written content, including speeches, talking points, op-eds, and blogs on behalf of the SVP, Climate and other climate senior leaders. Oversees the monitoring and analyzing of metrics such as media coverage, website traffic, and engagement on social media platforms.

Ability to engage individuals working in different roles and countries; capable of training and guiding team members with a high degree of cultural sensitivity.   • Exceptional people and project management skills . Must be able to lead and manage direct reports and manage the team's work and deliverables to produce high-quality results.

Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced, changing environment, executing quickly on a range of strategic and transactional responsibilities, as well as thinking critically to add value and solve problems. Ability to work against deadlines and under frequently changing circumstances.
  • Self- Awareness and emotional intelligence. Incorporates constructive feedback, owns mistakes, and holds oneself accountable.
  • Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent in communications, marketing, environmental issues, climate change, public policy or business required. Post-graduate degree in marketing or communications preferred.
  • Twelve to fifteen years of professional communications experience. Strong knowledge of the field of climate change is required.
  • Must possess a keen familiarity of top-tier climate conferences and demonstrated experience with organizing cross team participation in climate events.
  • Knowledge of social media platforms and ability to produce content for these channels including videos, posts, blogs, etc.
  • Demonstrated success in conceptualizing, developing, implementing, and managing communications strategies that support an entity's strategic goals across a wide range of diverse stakeholders and audiences.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with a track record of producing high-quality written
  • content for senior leaders.
  • Creative and innovative thinker who has experience utilizing a broad array of channels, outlets, and opportunities to craft and deliver messages to different audiences. Ability to position climate issues in such a way as to influence and leverage change well beyond WWF.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with people at all levels including the ability to build strong relationships with senior leaders, internal stakeholders, and external partners.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to supervise staff and multiple projects simultaneously, while meeting tight deadlines with attention to detail.
  • Ability to travel nationally and internationally (less than 10%)
