ABOUT THE POSITION

Clinical Psychologist I

Under direction, to provide psychological diagnostic services and therapeutic counseling for children and adults; and to do related work as required.

Clinical Psychologist II

Under general direction, to provide psychological diagnostic services and therapeutic counseling and psychotherapy for children and adults; and to do related work as required.

**Incumbents must be registered with the California Board of Psychology and have received a waiver of licensure from the California Department of Mental Health.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Clinical Psychologist I

This is the entry-level Clinical Psychologist class. Incumbents in this class are expected to be fully trained, but generally are not given as broad a range of caseload program responsibility as more experienced psychologists; and they consult closely with and receive clinical supervision from Clinical Psychologist III staff members. Incumbents are registered with the California Board of Psychology and have received a waiver of licensure from the California Department of Mental Health.

Clinical Psychologist II

This is the experienced working level Clinical Psychologist class. Employees in this class are expected to carry a wider variety of caseloads and program responsibility and provide guidance to incumbents in the entry-level class including Board of Psychology approved supervision of pre-licensure hours.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate will have knowledge and experience in working with adults who live with severe persistent mental health issues and co-occurring (mental health and substance use) issues. They will be registered with the California Board of Psychology and have received a Waiver of Licensure from the California Department of Mental Health.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Clinical Psychologist I/II

Makes psychological evaluations of cases referred; determines the appropriate tests and diagnostic procedures to be used; establishes a good working relationship with clients; conducts clinical interviews with clients and relatives in order to elicit information regarding attitudes, social backgrounds, developmental histories, and other psychologically relevant material; administers, scores, and interprets a wide variety of standardized intelligence tests, projective personality tests, and other tests involving vocational interests, aptitudes, and specific disabilities; performs psychotherapeutic counseling in group, family, and individual treatment modalities for cases referred; assists clients in exploring and gaining an insight into their personality and emotional difficulties, helping them resolve their conflicts, and arriving at more satisfying ways of coping with their environment; prepares reports that include diagnoses, prognoses, and other findings of psychological relevance to the disposition or treatment of cases; gives expert court testimony in cases involving mental deficiency or illness commitment proceedings; attends and addresses meetings of professional and lay groups; attends staff meetings.

Additionally, Clinical Psychologist II


Provides California Board eligible supervision to Clinical Psychologist I staff; coordinates and plans programs; supervises and trains less experienced therapists; makes contact with the public through the various media.

QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education and experience sufficient to directly demonstrate possession and application of the following:


Knowledge of: Principles and practices of modern clinical psychology, including abnormal psychology, diagnostic testing, personality theory, organic defects, psychological therapeutic counseling, statistics, and casework; principles, procedures, techniques, trends, and literature associated with biopsychosocial rehabilitation; documentation standards associated with public and private reimbursement systems and Federal financial compliance; and scope and activities of public and private health, social service, and law enforcement agencies.

Ability to: Apply the principles of biopsychosocial diagnosis and treatment planning; establish and maintain the confidence and cooperation with an interdisciplinary team; maintain an objective and empathetic understanding of mental illness, be tolerant, use tact and maintain emotional stability; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, mental health, health, and social services professionals, contract providers, County and State representatives, consumers and their family members, community groups, and the general public.

Minimum Qualifications

Clinical Psychologist I:


Completion of the following education and experience:

  • Possession of a PhD Degree in Psychology from an accredited college or university.

Clinical Psychologist II


Completion of the following education and experience:

  • Possession of a PhD Degree in Psychology from an accredited college or university and two years of post-doctorate experience in clinical psychology.
  • Knowledge of clinical supervision principles and State licensing board requirements.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Clinical Psychologist I

  • Incumbents are registered with the California Board of Psychology and have received a waiver of licensure from the California Department of Mental Health.
  • Incumbents are required to follow the ethical and legal standards required to maintain registration with the California Board of Psychology.
  • Incumbents shall have a maximum of five years to obtain a license as a psychologist issued by the California Board of Psychology or be terminated from the Clinical Psychologist I class.
  • A valid driver’s license may be required.

Clinical Psychologist II

  • Incumbents are registered with the California Board of Psychology and have received a waiver of licensure from the California Department of Mental Health.
  • Incumbents are required to follow the ethical and legal standards required to maintain licensure with the California Board of Psychology.
  • Possession of a license as a Clinical Psychologist issued by the California Board of Medical Quality Assurance
  • Two or more years of experience, as well as having the necessary coursework and certification to provide California Board eligible supervision of Clinical Psychologist I staff.
  • Possession of an appropriate California driver’s license.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and will be required to participate in Professional Assault Response Training (PART) and regular PART updates as provided by Shasta County.

An employee in this classification will also contribute up to 9.5% of their pay to this plan or will contribute such other amount to the plan as authorized by PEPRA and other applicable laws.
