Workforce Health Ambassador (WHA) positions will be hired to implement activities for the Workforce Health Ambassador Program focused on providing professional work experience that will introduce them to careers in public health and teach Ambassadors values in community service, creativity, integrity, leadership, and self-teamwork.

The WHA Program has a goal to build awareness for career opportunities in health for historically marginalized populations in Contra Costa County.

WHAs will be trained to conduct education and health promotion activities across Contra Costa County based upon health education and preventive health principles, the techniques of community organization and strategies to support new and existing community-based partner outreach efforts.

Ambassadors will gain exposure to the public health sector while developing a multitude of marketable and transferable skills, as well as real-world employment experience that serves as an entry point to permanent, sustainable careers in the health field.

WHAs will work to promote health education activities that address but are not limited to the following public health issues;

food insecurity, COVID-19 response, and climate change.

Positions are funded for 6-months.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Workforce Health Ambassadors will be trained to conduct health education and other general health promotion activities to perform the following functions :

  • Learns general department programs and available community resources in order to acquaint community residents with existing departmental programs
  • Learn to conduct outreach for community education on availability and range of health services and to locate community members in need of department services
  • Learn about core public health concepts, such as cultural humility, SDOH, and intersectionality
  • Attends meetings hosted by various civic groups, community agencies, businesses, and schools to encourage interest in the promotion of public health
  • Represents Contra Costa Health Services with select community organizations and agencies
  • Learn how to conduct surveys or focus groups to determine community needs and collection of statistical data
  • Reviews promotions for literacy level and cultural competency
  • Maintains stock of educational materials and distributes educational material to clients; operates video-conferencing platforms, such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams
  • Assist with preparation of visual aids and display materials
  • Assist with preparation of reports and recommendations on community health needs and services available to meet them
  • Assists with facilitation of discussion groups on priority health issues and barriers
  • Publicizes health programs and services through various media
  • Understand, follow, and carry out written and oral directions
  • Learn how to speak effectively before groups
  • Acknowledge and respect cultural and linguistic differences of the County's diverse population
  • Development of essential employment skills
  • Methods of data collection

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma and / or GED required.

JOB QUALIFICAITONS :

  • A valid California driver’s license, proof of vehicle insurance, and reliable transportation will be needed to carry out job-related essential functions as traveling between sites is a requirement and may also need to be able to drive County issued vehicles.
  • Drivers must have a clean record with no infraction / accidents and be 21 years of age or older.

  • Web conferencing platforms
  • Bilingual in one or more of the following languages (Spanish, Chinese, Tagalog, Lao, Vietnamese, Pashto, Dari, Korean, and Nepalese)
  • Demonstrated interest in Public Health or Professional Career Development

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Varies outdoor in sun / rain, remote locations across the county as assigned. Examples include door-to-door household and business canvassing and community engagement at large events.

Performs field visits to public spaces for outreach at strategic locations across Contra Costa County.
