We are actively looking for a Fiber Technician Apprentice in the Austin, TX area.
Position Overview
As a Fiber Tech Apprentice, you support the installation and maintenance of fiber optic networks by building, prepping, and splicing fiber. You'll also interpret construction drawings, design maps, splice schematics, and work orders. Working under experienced technicians, you'll gain hands-on training in fiber installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting. This role requires a strong focus on safety, detail, and teamwork. As a short-term training position, you're expected to reach Fiber Tech 1 proficiency within six months.
This is an Hourly Non-Exempt position that reports to the Fiber Splicing Manager or Construction Manager depending on the area assigned.
What you'll have
Must set up and maintain a safe working environment, adhering to proper personal protective equipment (PPE) guidelines.
Punctuality; Arrive at work on time every day limiting unexcused absences.
Responsible for maintaining, cleaning and organizing work area, truck, equipment, tools and office location.
Excellent teamwork skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with coworkers, vendors, and customers.
Time management skills are crucial to ensure efficient use of working hours.
Timely completion of required documentation
Communication Skills : Effective verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with team members and communicate technical information clearly.
What you'll do
Assist with building, prepping, and splicing fiber enclosures for assigned projects.
Learn and apply splicing techniques, including fusion, mechanical, and ribbon splicing.
Prepare and handle fiber optic cables, including high-count fibers (up to 864).
Follow construction drawings to ensure accurate installation and splicing.
Fiber Network & Technical Skills
Develop understanding of fiber optic networks, components, and transmission systems.
Learn industry standards for installation and maintenance.
Operate OTDRs and other test equipment to measure signal loss and troubleshoot connectivity issues.
Documentation
Record splicing activities and test results accurately.
Follow documentation protocols as required by partner companies.
Work closely with Engineers, Project Managers, and team leads to meet project goals.
Maintain a positive, self-motivated work ethic with minimal supervision.
Communicate effectively to manage workload and project progress.
Safety & Physical Requirements
Follow all safety protocols, including proper use of PPE and traffic control procedures.
Perform physically demanding tasks such as climbing, lifting, and working in confined spaces or at heights using bucket trucks or aerial lifts.
