Job description

  • A Master of Fine Arts (MFA) or Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Film Studies or a related field is required, along with a minimum of three (3) years of successful teaching experience at the secondary or post-secondary level.

  • Must have working knowledge of various digital and film mediums and be able to work with the latest technology including camera, lighting, computer and grip equipment

  • Must be adept with the following computer programs: Final Cut Pro, Garageband, Color, Motion, Final Draft, Photoshop or equivalent Macintosh programs

  • Must have working knowledge of an Apple Computer lab so as to be able to maintain and upgrade equipment regularly

  • Must be able to instruct in all of the following subjects - Film History, Film Criticism, Scriptwriting, Camera, Lighting, Grip, Directing, Sound Design, Editing, Producing, Set Construction, All related computer programs

  • Must be CTE qualified or eligible to become so

  • Experience auditioning and ranking students based on their potential in the field using rubrics.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with other faculty at the Fine Arts Center

  • Ability to effectively recruit and retain students in the program for the duration of their high school career

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Strong verbal and written skills


Major Responsibilities:

  • Embrace and promote the mission, vision, and core values of the Fine Arts Center

  • Prepare structured lessons that encourage and foster skill and portfolio development, creative thinking skills, work ethic, and artistic vision.

  • Advise and prepare students for post-secondary study in filmmaking.

  • Use effective classroom management skills to ensure a safe, orderly, and creative studio environment.

  • Regularly assess student achievement, skill mastery and career development skills.

  • Manage classroom administration and record keeping including: grades, attendance, student progress and documentation of student work.

  • Manage studio material inventory and equipment, including the process of ordering and upkeep.

  • Systematically gather, analyze and use data to measure student progress, guide instruction and provide timely feedback.

  • Regularly communicate with students, parents and colleagues share artistic progress, encourage positive behavior, and resolve behavioral and artistic issues.

  • Attend and participate in faculty, administrative and departmental meetings, parent conferences, open house, other school functions, and in-service professional development sessions.

  • Continuously assess curriculum and scope/sequence of the Digital Filmmaking Program in order to ensure that students are receiving the highest level of instruction and preparation.

  • Perform other duties as the needs of the school and needs of the students may demand (e.g. competitions, film screenings, etc.)


Teaching Artist Expectations

Fine Arts Center Teaching Artists are expected to advance their practice as both a working artist and an educator. Candidates for this position must:

  • Balance their professional development in both the educational and creative fields

  • Maintain an active career in their art form while holding to their daily teaching responsibilities

  • Foster connections with local, national and international artists that can enhance the educational experience of the students

  • Work with the FAC Director to bring in guest artists that enhance the educational experience of the students

  • Exercise best practices in education - classroom management, effective grading strategies, timely completion of school and district tasks

  • Demonstrate the ability to navigate through and grow within the K-12 school district setting, meeting all school and school district professional expectations
