Capital University seeks a dynamic leader for the University Pastor position. The University Pastor will provide spiritual leadership and pastoral care for students of diverse backgrounds in a vibrant and inclusive residential learning community.

The University Pastor will also develop campus ministry programming and student support in partnership with other staff and community members.

Essential Responsibilities :

University Worship

  • Plan and coordinate the public worship life of the University including weekly worship, Baccalaureate and other campus worship services.
  • Represent Campus Ministries at large gatherings such as Welcome Weekend, Honors Convocation, Commencement exercises, and other special events.
  • Cultivate student involvement in worship leadership and help students prepare to be leaders in their faith communities.
  • Provide opportunities for religious gatherings for all faith communities on campus and connections to local resources.

Pastoral Care

  • Maintain a ministry of presence to provide pastoral care and spiritual guidance to the University community.
  • Provide pastoral counseling to students in times of crisis.
  • Nurture the spirit of community on campus.
  • Seek opportunities for fellowship with students both formally and informally.

Student Development and Community Engagement

Develop campus ministry programming to engage a diverse student body, which would include opportunities for students to examine their faith and spirituality;

opportunities for vocational reflection and service; interfaith programming.

  • Serve as an active member of the Student Development team, including attending meetings, retreats, and trainings, and assisting with other major programs and events.
  • In conjunction with the Office of Student and Community Engagement, provide opportunities to serve on campus and in the community.
  • Serves as a confidential support person through the Title IX reporting process.
  • Guide and support the ministries of faith-based student organizations such as Embrace Ministries, Interfaith Council and Center for Faith and Learning.

Spiritual Leadership and Management

  • Assess spiritual needs of the university and develop plans for the future.
  • Provide leadership for the religious community on campus.
  • Serve on appropriate University committees.
  • Support the University's relationship with the Southern Ohio Synod, clergy, Region 6 of the ELCA and ELCA Churchwide.
  • Serve as the University's representative for NetVUE.
  • Maintain and share a calendar of religious and holy days for major faiths.
  • Pursue grants to support the spiritual development of students, faith exploration, and professional development.
  • Administer operating budget and endowed funds associated with campus ministry.
  • Perform other duties assigned.

Qualifications :

The qualifications listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and / or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Master's degree (M.Div.) with 3-5 years of related experience preferably as a campus minister, college chaplain or congregation pastor with experience in young adult ministry.
  • An Ordained Minister of Word and Sacrament in good standing and rostered with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).
  • Familiarity with the traditions and values of Lutheran higher education.
  • Proven ability as a creative and innovative worship leader.
  • Experience working with college students and accompanying them on their spiritual journey and faith development.
  • A commitment to interfaith work and experience working with individuals of diverse faith traditions.
  • Dedicated to creating an inclusive community that embraces difference and values diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills in development of campus ministry programming.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with university colleagues and community partners.
