For the 2021-2022 academic year, we enrolled over 13,000 students in which 48% identify as Latinx, 14% as Asian / Pacific Islander, 3% as Black / African American, 30% as White, 1% as American Indian / Alaska Native, and 4% as multiracial.

The successful candidate will join a department dedicated to providing services responsive to the students it serves.

Providing services at Clovis Community College; the counselor will cover a full range of counseling responsibilities including academic, career, transfer and personal counseling to a diverse student population.

The successful candidate for the counselor position will be responsible for :

  • Applying an equity-minded framework and ensuring services and processes are designed and delivered to meet the diverse needs of specialized population of students;
  • Assisting with coordinating and providing liaison services with high school special education case managers and related staff / faculty, college instructors, counselors, staff, and community partners such as California Department of Rehabilitation (CA DOR) to assist students in accessing appropriate accommodations and resources to support the student in the pursuit of their educational goals;
  • Working assignments in various settings and times, including evening and / or weekend, on-line or off-campus. Feeder high school visits are an integral part of the job duties;
  • Serving as an advocate for students with disabilities to facilitate equitable access to students transitioning into the community college;
  • Evaluating verification of disability documentation, conduct interactive discussions, identify educational limitations, and arrange for appropriate and reasonable accommodations which address those limitations;
  • Developing / revising Academic Accommodation Plans (AAPs) and Student Educational Plans (SEPs) for students with disabilities;
  • Providing specialized academic, career, personal, and disability management counseling to students with disabilities from diverse backgrounds;
  • Facilitating / coordinating accommodations such as testing accommodations, note taking, alternate media, adaptive equipment, American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting, etc.;
  • Collaborating with others to plan and provide students with support in navigating the college processes related to enrollment, matriculation and onboarding;
  • Utilizing multiple measures to determine appropriate class placement;
  • Monitoring and tracking students’ academic performance and progress in degree objectives to assure effective use of services and successful attainment of program objectives;
  • Demonstrating effective use of college applications (Starfish, Colleague, Student Aid Report (SARS), Accessible Information Management (AIM), Assist.
  • org, Cal State Apply, etc.);
  • Maintaining confidential records; accurately recording and completing data entry of information needed to complete mandated reports and service records;
  • Participating in program development and review, servicing unit and student learning outcome development and review, grants, and other reports as directed;
  • Participating in professional development activities;
  • Serving on and attending department, college and district committees as needed;
  • Creating and / or teaching Educational Strategy Courses (ESC) courses;
  • Flexibility as duties may include extended day, evening and weekend assignments;
  • Communicating effectively with students and staff and maintaining effective working relationships;
  • Otherwise fulfilling all of the duties and responsibilities of faculty as required by Administrative Regulation 7122; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices; and

1) Master’s in rehabilitation counseling; or

2) Master’s in counseling, guidance counseling, student personnel, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, marriage, family and child counseling or a bachelor’s degree in marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling and possession of a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT); and

  • Fifteen or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work specifically related to people with disabilities, or completion of six semester units, or the equivalent of a graduate-level counseling practicum or counseling field work courses, in a post-secondary Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) Program or in a program dealing predominantly or exclusively with people with disabilities; or
  • Two years of full-time experience, or the equivalent in one or more of the following : Counseling for students with disabilities;

or Counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities of the position were predominantly or exclusively for persons with disabilities, or the equivalent; or

3) A valid California Community College Credential; or

4) The equivalent education and / or experience (requires an equivalency).

  • Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility;
  • Recent experience working with African American, Asian / Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
  • Willingness to examine and remediate one’s practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
  • Related work and professional experience;
  • Experience working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds, students with disabilities;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with computers, and other technologies, which are utilized in providing high-quality instruction and support to students;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff; and
  • Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.
