POSITION PURPOSE / IMPORTANT APPLICATION INFORMATION

The Seasonal Specialist positions are responsible for a variety of maintenance work including mowing, edging, planting, irrigating, fertilizing, and light construction.

These positions work in a variety of areas including Athletic Fields, Greenhouse, Open Space and, Parks, Mechanics, Standley Lake, and the Promenade.

These positions are physically demanding in nature with exposure to extreme weather conditions. Most positions work four 10-hour days during the week (Monday through Thursday or Tuesday through Friday) or at Standley Lake (Friday through Monday), however hours may vary with possible weekend, holiday, and special events.

Some positions available beginning in March. Most positions will begin after April 14th and last through October 10th.

The full salary range for this position is stated above. The starting range of pay is dependent on qualifications and experience of each individual candidate.

JOB SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS

Essential Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities, and Tasks

1. Assist with grounds maintenance which may include the following :

  • Mowing, edging, and weeding of parks, trails, lake, and right-of-ways
  • Planting and maintaining of trees, flowers and shrubs at parks
  • Removal of trash, cleaning of shelters, restrooms, and picnic shelters

2. Assists in applying granular and liquid fertilization applications

3. Operates light and heavy equipment including chippers, chainsaws, landscape construction equipment, skid-steers, industrial mowers, pick-up trucks (as approved by supervisor), mowers, backpack blowers, small dump trucks (as approved by supervisor), or similar equipment

4. Performs general custodial work at public facilities and open space areas including removing trash and cleaning of shelters and restrooms

5. Painting designated facilities and structures

6. Assists with a variety of construction-related projects and playground maintenance

7. Assists an Irrigator while making repairs

8. Performs irrigation system checks to ensure the system is operating efficiently

9. Possesses a valid driver's license and maintains a safe driving record (for those approved to drive)

10. Maintains regular and punctual attendance

Athletic Field Job Specific Functions :

1. Assists with :

  • Dragging and lining fields, and packing home plate areas and pitching mounds
  • Reading and following athletic event schedules, attending athletic events, and other related meetings
  • Performing tractor work, fence repair, and irrigation

Greenhouse Job Specific Functions :

1. Assists with annual bed preparation, planting, maintenance, irrigation, fertilization, weeding, soil conditioning, pruning and displays

Open Space & Forestry Job Specific Functions :

1. Assists in tree trimming and removal operations by cutting, hauling, and chipping brush

2. Assists with weekend volunteer projects in Open Space areas when needed

Parks Job Specific Functions :

1. Assists with :

  • Planting and maintaining of trees and shrubs at parks, City facilities, and right-of-ways
  • Performing tractor work, fence repair, and irrigation

Mechanics Helper

1. Assists mechanics in repairs of small and large equipment, tire repair, oil changes and related mechanical work

2. Retrieves and delivers parts

Promenade Job Specific Functions :

1. Assists in the maintenance of the Promenade Facility, including repairing and maintaining permanent structures in the Promenade

2. Performs general custodial work and day porter service at public facilities, including removing trash

Other Duties and Responsibilities

1. Performs general routine maintenance as needed

2. Follows safety procedures and uses personal protection equipment such as goggles and ear protection

Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job, and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City's discretion.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS / PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

Education, Experience, Skills, Formal Training, Licenses, and Certifications

Required :

  • Must be at least 16 years of age to apply, must be 18 for most positions; limited positions are available for applicants ages 16 and 17
  • Must be at least 16 years of age

Preferred :

  • Valid driver's license and maintenance of a safe driving record
  • Previous experience in one or more of the following areas :
  • Daily maintenance of parks, open space and / or athletic fields
  • Operating light equipment and tools such as pick-up trucks, mowers, chippers, skid-steers
  • Planting, pruning, irrigating, fertilizing and maintaining flower gardens
  • Light maintenance and repair of fences or structures, custodial work

Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and skills, may be considered.

Physical Requirements

This position requires a moderate degree of physical stamina and strength, including the ability to :

  • Frequently sit, stand and walk on uneven terrain
  • Occasionally squat, bend, kneel, twist, climb, balance and reach over head
  • Occasionally lift, carry, push or pull items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds
  • Frequently use hands and fingers for fine manipulation; occasionally use light and firm grasp
  • Occasionally step up and down to enter and exit vehicles and climb ladders; constant actuate mechanism to safely operate heavy equipment and vehicles
  • Frequently see objects up close to perform office tasks and far away to observe activity for safety hazards or problems
  • Constantly use hearing to interact with guests and staff and recognize trouble outside of view

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is constantly performed indoors and outdoors with constant exposure to extreme temperatures year-round. Position is responsible for the maintenance of all City parks, forestry, open space, and athletic fields throughout the year.

Snow removal at City facilities, parks, and trails is done when needed.

Required Materials and Equipment

Operates light equipment such as pick-up trucks, small dump trucks, tractors, horticultural hand tools, rototillers, water equipment, trenchers, sod-cutters, pruners, and other equipment as necessary.

Depending on the project, may also utilize small tools such as hammers, shovels, saws, measuring tape, levels, drills, and power tools to complete assigned responsibilities
