Job description
MHA – Mental Health Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people live their best life. We provide a wide range of services across Western Massachusetts, including outpatient therapy, substance use recovery, supports for individuals with developmental disabilities or brain injuries, and residential and housing programs. MHA serves individuals impacted by mental illness, substance use, developmental disabilities, brain injuries, and homelessness. Our mission is rooted in inclusion, dignity, and empowering people to lead fulfilling, independent lives.

About New Ways Services – (ABI Division):New Way is MHA’s residential and community-based program for individuals living with acquired brain injuries (ABI) due to trauma, stroke, or serious illness. These life changes can bring physical, emotional, and cognitive challenges, and New Way provides the support needed to navigate them. Through personalized care, skill-building, and meaningful daily routines, individuals are supported in gaining independence, reconnecting with others, and living fully in the community. Our homes are safe, accessible, and integrated into typical neighborhoods, offering 24/7 support along with nursing, clinical, and therapeutic services.
Position Summary:The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides direct oversight and support to the care team on-site through hands-on education, coaching, and modeling. This position ensures the health and well-being of participants through advocacy with medical providers, coordination with visiting nursing services, and participation in discharge planning following hospital or rehab stays. The LPN supports the maintenance of a safe environment by conducting medication and chart audits and collaborates closely with nursing and supervisory teams to meet individual needs.

Pay Rate: $34.00+ / hour.

Open Shift: Monday-Friday 9am-5pm (40h).

Key Responsibilities:
  • Communicate with participants and team members in a respectful, enthusiastic, and empowering manner that promotes self-esteem and self-direction.
  • Provide and model safe execution of health, safety, and medical protocols for participants. Offer training, observation, and review of protocol implementation to support staff, informing the Nurse Manager of concerns as needed.
  • Act as a liaison between participants and external providers including hospitals, clinics, and families, while promoting self-advocacy.
  • Monitor participants for medication side effects, infection, or symptoms of medical conditions and respond according to established protocols, including timely documentation and tracking.
  • Respond to medical or behavioral emergencies in accordance with MHA, MRC, and DDS policies. Ensure appropriate communication and follow-up with supervisory staff and emergency personnel as needed.
  • Report and document all suspected cases of abuse or neglect following mandated reporting procedures.
  • Assist in scheduling, coordinating, and, when appropriate, attending medical, dental, and psychiatric appointments. Administer medications per MAP standards and record health-related data as necessary.
  • Conduct medication log audits to ensure MAP compliance and accurate recordkeeping.
  • Participate in team meetings, supervisions, and ongoing training to enhance knowledge, skills, and collaboration with colleagues.
  • Maintain professionalism, strong interpersonal skills, and organizational capabilities to ensure participant goals and program outcomes are successfully met.

  • Adaptability to meet the changing needs of program participants.
  • Demonstrated compassion, patience, and strong interpersonal skills.

    About Mental Health Association, Inc.:

What We Do MHA (Mental Health Association) helps people live their best life. We provide access to therapies for emotional health and wellness; services for substance use recovery, developmental disabilities and acquired brain injury; services for housing and residential programming, and more. With respect, integrity and compassion, MHA provides each individual served through person-driven programming to foster independence, community engagement, wellness and recovery. Why It Matters The youth, adults, seniors and families we serve want the same things in life as anyone: to have friends, work, go to school, have meaningful relationships, express themselves (and be heard), and be accepted in their community for who they are. With our help and resources from a caring community, people can live their potential, in their community, every day. How We Think Starting in the 1960s, MHA’s groundbreaking efforts and advocacy helped to transition people away from institutional living to a life in our community. This became a model for the deinstitutionalization movement. Today, our leadership continues to advance awareness of mental health conditions and needs at local, regional and national levels. We drive compassionate care for those challenged by mental health, developmental disabilities, substance use, homelessness, acquired brain injury and more.
