ABOUT THE ORLEANS PARISH DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE (OPDA) :

Jason Rogers Williams took office as the Orleans Parish District Attorney on January 11, 2021, and is building a 21st century prosecutors' office with a team of the best and brightest from around the country and a mission of being as smart on crime as the office has historically been tough on crime.

It is the mission of OPDA to increase public safety through the ethical, consistent, and zealous enforcement of the law.

JOB SUMMARY :

This unpaid intern will join OPDA's growing team of analytics experts.

The Data Intern will be charged with assisting members of the analytics team with various tasks. This includes, but is not limited to, data query requests, facilitating data relationships with criminal justice and community partners, streamlining OPDA's internal data processes, and in-depth research projects.

The ideal candidate has moderate competency in data management, data analysis and research methodology. Additionally, the candidate should be proficient in data query and analytics languages and software.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES :

  • Complete data queries and dataset cleaning for dissemination to community partners and public records / media requests for data.
  • Assemble large, complex data sets that meet functional / non-functional OPDA requirements.
  • Create data tools for analytics and data scientist team members.
  • Work with internal stakeholders, including the Administrative team, Data Analytics team, Division leadership, and Assistant District Attorneys, to assist with data-related technical issues and support their data infrastructure needs.
  • Work with interagency data and analytics experts to strive for greater functionality in OPDA and criminal justice data systems.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE :

  • Completed upper-division courses in Computer Science, Statistics, research-oriented Social Science (e.g. Psychology, Economics, Sociology, Criminal Justice).
  • Experience with statistical package software (e.g. R, SPSS, SAS, MatLab, etc...)
  • Experience working with 'messy' data; ability to identify sources of bad data, develop solutions to these data entries, and clean the data.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE :

  • Working SQL knowledge and experience working with relational databases and query authoring (SQL), as well as working familiarity with a variety of databases.
  • A successful history of manipulating, processing, and extracting value from large disconnected datasets.
  • Experience building data visualization dashboards (R, Tableau, Power BI)

INTERNSHIP EXPECTATIONS :

The Data Intern will be expected to work on-site at the OPDA office no less than 20 hours in a typical week. Occasional tasks may require the Intern to travel offsite to an OPDA satellite office or community partner.

Thus, transportation is helpful, but not required.
