Assistant Director of Student Leadership & Belonging

General Summary

The Assistant Director of Student Leadership and Belonging supports the vibrant campus of Community College of Denver (CCD) by providing strategic oversight of student engagement, belonging, leadership development, and co-curricular programming. This position supervises professional and student staffincluding the Student Leadership and Belonging Coordinator and student employeesadvises student leaders, including the Student Government Association (SGA), coordinates signature campus events, and implements inclusive leadership series and student development initiatives aligned with CCD's Strategic Plan. The Assistant Director plays a pivotal role in fostering an inclusive sense of community and belonging among a diverse student population.

Primary Duties

  • Supervision & Staff Development

Provide direct supervision, support, and performance evaluation for the full-time Student Leadership and Belonging Coordinator and SPARC student work-study staff.

  • Provide coaching and mentorship to enhance leadership capacity, organizational management, and inclusive practices.
  • Oversee supervision, schedule, and appearances of Swoop, CCD's mascot.
  • Leadership Development & Inclusion (20%)
  • Design, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive leadership development series focused on equity, identity, and inclusive practices.

  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to develop and offer leadership opportunities within and around the City of Denver.
  • Facilitate workshops and retreats that promote cultural awareness, social responsibility, and civic engagement.
  • Serve as the Primary Advisor for Student Government Association, including leadership development of student officers and members, participation at national conferences and weekly meetings, events, retreats, and training facilitation.
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate student leaders and student employees, including student led organization members.
  • Update and review student led organization and student government bylaws and constitutions.
  • Event Planning & Oversight (15-20%)
  • Plan, coordinate, and assess major college and Tri-Institutional events (e.g., Welcome Week, Fall Fest, Spring Fling) in collaboration with internal and Auraria Campus partners.

  • Oversee the scheduling, risk management, and logistics for campus-wide student programs and cultural celebrations.
  • Lead the planning and execution of CCD's Commencement Celebration.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for internal and external vendors and services for the day of the event.
  • Develop and distribute communication to students about commencement preparation and registration.
  • Create and maintain organization of vendor contracts and documentation.
  • Serve as a point of contact for and delegate tasks to volunteers on the day of commencement.
  • Engagement Strategy & Collaboration (15-20%)
  • Support the development and implementation of a holistic student engagement and belonging strategy aligned with institutional strategic goals.

  • Collaborate with departments across the institution and Auraria Campus to develop integrated co-curricular opportunities.
  • Serve on internal campus and tri-institutional committees assigned or approved by Dean of SPARC.
  • Budget & Resource Management (10%)
  • Manage program budgets, including tracking expenditures for leadership programs, events, programming, commencement, and student organization activities.

  • Perform budget analysis and reporting to inform decision-making and demonstrate responsible fiscal management.
  • Oversee rental and maintenance of event equipment and supplies.
  • Marketing, Communication, and Social Media (5%)
  • Coordinate marketing of student engagement, belonging, and leadership initiatives through student newsletters, social media, flyers, and digital platforms.

  • Serve as a key communicator for events, student leadership opportunities, and belonging initiatives.
  • Serve as a liaison between student led groups and internal departments ensuring institutional marketing guidelines.
  • Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : Any equivalent combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities. Education : (Minimum / Required) Bachelor's degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Educational Leadership, or related field required. Experience : (required / minimum) Minimum of three years of progressive experience at the collegiate level in the area of student activities, leadership, or related student affairs areas. Demonstrated history of planning, executing, and evaluating large-scale student programs and leadership initiatives. Supervisory experience of student or volunteer staff / demonstrated managerial skills. Knowledge / Skills / Abilities : (required / minimum) Strong knowledge of student development theory, leadership models, and inclusive engagement strategies. Ability to engage and support diverse student populations, including first-generation, BIPOC, and non-traditional students. Proficient in event planning, risk management, and program assessment. Exceptional organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Familiarity with social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, etc.) and digital content creation. Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, student-centered environment. Must be able to lift 30 pounds, walk long distances.

    Equipment Used : Computers, printers, phones, copy machines, fax machines, and scanners. Occasionally, there will be the need to use and run entertainment tools like a popcorn machine, sno-cone machine, cotton candy machine, or others as necessary.

    Other Considerations

    This position requires work during evening hours and weekends when necessary.

    Selection Process
