Job description
I. JOB OVERVIEW Job Description Summary: The Division of Safety & Facilities brings together University Resilience; the GW Police Department; Facilities Planning, Construction, and Management; GWorld; Transportation and Fleet Services, Business Integration Group and GW Venues to better and more strategically support GW now and into the future. Given the many close connections and strong working relationships among these areas, this organizational structure streamlines university services, increases shared insights and collaboration, and optimizes GW resources.

Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Events, the Director, Production directs and oversees the Technical Services organization within Venues at the George Washington University.

This position serves three key functions: manage and maintain specialty venue technology and AV while promoting technical capabilities to all stakeholders; oversee a team of full-time employees, contractors and GW Temps to provide technical support events in GW venues and special projects and liaison with GWIT to ensure audiovisual and web services to external clients and the university community who use venues with Academic Technology is updated and supported.

Responsibilities include:
  • Ensure venues are properly equipped, staffed, and maintained to support a wide range of events
  • Oversee participation in walk-throughs, client inquires and production meetings
  • Supervise and mentor production staff, fostering a collaborative and accountable team environment
  • Lead hiring, onboarding, and professional development efforts for full-time and temp technical staff
  • Establish clear roles, expectations, and workflows for staff and event support teams
  • Translate event needs into actionable production and operational plans
  • Communicate clearly across technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Provides oversight and technical support to the Event Host, with the assistance from Venue Managers
  • Ensures that required equipment and labor are available to support events at the University’ venues. Maintains operations by Technical Services personnel.
  • Develop and implement production plans, timelines, and standards to ensure consistent, high-quality execution
  • Ensure scheduling team has up-to-date information on services, equipment and fees
  • Serve as a key point of coordination for technical and AV needs of high-impact or complex programs
  • Lead planning and execution of capital improvement projects related to venue technical systems
  • Oversee upgrades to AV, lighting, and broadcast systems to maintain modern capabilities
  • Support long-term planning to ensure sustainability and reliability of venue systems
  • Manage relationships with external production vendors, integrators, and contractors
  • Coordinate vendor activities to support seamless event execution
  • Serves as main liaison to GWIT for information on services available in GW spaces
  • Oversee on-site execution and ensure all production elements are delivered to standard
  • Utilizes and maximizes University-wide resources in an effective manner to meet the needs for student, university, and non-university usage
  • Develops trainings and templates for technical equipment in major venues on campus for Venues staff, Event Hosts and self-service locations
  • Prepares statistical analysis and reports on usage and revenues
  • Prepares and approves billing statements and oversees follow-up activities to ensure timely and accurate payment; serves as the approver for invoicing.
  • Instrumental in determining, building and maintaining an infrastructure that supports Technical Services’ needs, including budget forecasting, life cycle of equipment, repairing of existing equipment and determining when equipment should be replaced. Reviews, recommends and determines necessary purchase requests

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

The position is based at GW’s Foggy Bottom Campus in Washington, DC [but may require travel].

This position is designated as Essential Onsite, which means this position performs essential core safety and operational functions and typically need to be on campus even when access to campus is restricted. (For example: these employees reported to work daily throughout the pandemic – lab personnel, EHS staff, police officers, facilities staff among.) Minimum Qualifications: Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 8 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 6 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:
  • Extensive experience in technical production, venue management, university campuses or live event operations is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience managing large-scale, high-profile events is desired.
  • Strong knowledge of AV systems, lighting, staging, and/or broadcast production is preferred.
  • Leadership experience working in a large entertainment, sporting, educational or hotel venue is desired.
