Job description

Overview Medical Science Liaison, Nephrology is part of Otsuka America Pharmaceutical, Inc. and contributes to the ecosystem-based customer engagement model. The MSL provides clinical, scientific and health economic information related to nephrology and immunology disease states and the appropriate utilization of approved Otsuka products within an ecosystem. This is a field-based position that engages with Key Influencers (KIs), Local Practice Leaders (LPLs), healthcare providers, and patient groups to improve patient outcomes. The MSL collaborates with ecosystem partners to customize the regional business strategy and handles medical and educational requirements of customers. The MSL may cover multiple products within a therapeutic area and engage in broad clinical and scientific discussions that inform patient care and generate insights for the ecosystem. The local ecosystem approach creates a unified focus among account management, medical, patient access, marketing and market access to engage local health systems and identify opportunities to improve the patient experience. This matrix model aims for more coordinated and seamless care with digital-enabled support to bridge care gaps. Position Overview – Medical Science Liaison (Senior Manager) This role reports to regional Field Medical Affairs leadership and contributes to the development of the ecosystem strategic business plan by identifying key stakeholders vital to the ecosystem. It may involve working across multiple products within nephrology and immunology, and engaging in clinical and scientific discussions that impact patient care, with insights shared within the ecosystem. Key Activities and Responsibilities Provide a clinical and scientific perspective to the local execution plan addressing customer challenges to improve patient care and outcomes, including coordination around field activity execution. Build, cultivate, and leverage external relationships with key scientific and medical customers and organizations within the territory to understand evolving healthcare trends, disease states, Otsuka products, systems, and services across the ecosystem (including KIs, LPLs, KDMs and Patient Advocacy). Deliver on business objectives beyond the territory and influence Medical Affairs. Maintain deep understanding of the ecosystem to align with Otsuka’s patient-centric strategy and priorities, including delivery of optimal patient care. Serve as a credible source of evidence-based information demonstrating the value of Otsuka products from clinical, economic, and humanistic perspectives; partner with providers and stakeholders to apply real-world solutions to improve patient outcomes. Build internal relationships across the matrix team to enable an enterprise approach and shape local medical strategies within planned timelines. Lead special projects as requested by management and participate in incremental roles within FMA. Disseminate disease state and healthcare landscape information to customers in the field as priorities dictate. Responsible for clinical and data-focused training of promotional and disease-state speakers; may serve on Otsuka’s speaker bureau to support product education within the territory. Collect and submit medical insights to drive decision making and inform evidence generation and healthcare solutions; share insights at the local ecosystem level. Assist with Otsuka’s clinical trials program (registrational, post-marketing and ISTs) and health economics outcomes research; provide clinical expertise and feedback on site selection and trial operations. Participate as a mentor in peer development including new hires; support other areas of the organization (Safety & Pharmacovigilance, Sales Training medical education, Field Medical Center of Excellence) as needed. Qualifications MD/DO, PharmD or PhD in life sciences required. Deep understanding of health systems and patient care delivery, with experience working with healthcare professionals and decision-makers. Minimum 3 years relevant experience in pharmaceutical industry Medical Affairs. Prior training or experience in immune-mediated kidney disease is preferred. Strong business acumen; knowledge of the industry, Otsuka’s business model and value proposition, key competitors, and market dynamics; able to identify solutions aimed at improving patient outcomes. Excellent communication and collaboration skills; professional maturity, confidence, and ability to resolve conflicts; capable of working cross-functionally. Ability to lead teams and projects strategically; summarize complex information concisely for presentations and interactions. Solid understanding of industry legal, regulatory, and compliance landscape; ability to work in an evolving environment. Business travel up to 70% of time, depending on territory size; preferred living location is a key city within the territory.
